I voted for the first three. I was still listening mostly to Queen at this point but the likes of Step On and Groove have an undeniable nostalgic pull as I was becoming more aware of pop music at the same time. Memories of listening to the radio 1 top 40 and taping songs, that sorta thing.

Deee-lite is one of those eternal floorfillers. It always works you know. Step On is lot of fun too and I think Nothing Compares 2 U is maybe a masterpiece. Great record.

Even the Primal Scream one is good (no thanks to them of course) but I prefer Come Together.

Yes, it is.

Remember everyone talking about her crying in the video? Christ, she was beautiful at one time. Bob Mortimer gave her a special mention in that fishing bollocks that's just finished.

1990, the year the NME went fully student disco.

Kinky Afro beats Step On obvs. I liked Mandinka because ol’ fatty Pirroni was on it but Nothing Compares... is AOR bilge, most of the list is squarely unproblematic, nothing to get a generation gap going.
It takes a big man to cry, but it takes a bigger man to laugh at that man.

Weren't James terrible?

I was never a fan, but I wouldn't go that far.

What makes them 'terrible' rather than just 'average', G?

It's just got that horrible MTV polished rock 'dance' sound -and the singer always came across like some earnest, over eager drama teacher.

I remember my Mum commenting on how beautiful she was and I was like, "Mum, but she's got a skinhead!".

But, aye. And it's one of those things where her beauty undeniably added something to That video.

Didn't she try and come on to you once? Was she shitfaced?

I don't think so, she looked kind of nervous. Pub in Dublin in 1993, she was 10 feet away from me, four or five people with her. Tugging at her hair and staring at me like I'd never been stared at before.

Deee-Lite and the Lemonheads are the only ones on the short list I ever listened to.
Where would rock 'n' roll be without feedback?

Huh?
Like fast-moving clouds casting shadows against a hillside, the melody-loop shuddered with a sense of the sublime, the awful unknowable majesty of the world.
