Bumper lyrics quiz - three left, now with clues

Postby Rayge » 13 Jul 2018, 11:58

All singles (naturally), all American and the sort of thing I like, most hits, none after 1974

1 The cryin' tyres, the bustin' glass,/The painful scream, that I heard last - J Frank Wilson & the Cavaliers, Last Kiss: Twang

2 Good to see you again, Rosie / I know I've changed a lot since then [singer-songwriter, title song of debut LP]

3 The next day, when they found them, Mary and Jimmy were dead - Shangs (or Paul Peterson) Give Us Your Blessings: Twang

4 She's the terror of Colorado Boulevard - Jan & Dean, Liltle Old Lady from Pasadena: pcqgod

5 She's a Rudolf Valentino fan, and she doesn't claim to understand - Phil Ochs, Miranda: Darkness Fish

6 It's not very cherry, it's an oldie but a goody - Jan & Dean, Surf City: borofan

7 She had a picture of a cowboy, tatooed on her spine - Coasters, Little Egypt: Charlie

8 Together they would travel on a boat with billowed sail - Peter Paul and Mary, Puff the Magic Dragon: Darkness Fish

9 Orang utang ring-ting-tong/ I'm related to old King Kong Neil Sedaka, I Go Ape - Dayodead

10 There's a jukebox playing / Just a half a block down / Saying I'm going to the river /Gonna jump right in and drown [soul single on Atco, 1964 B-side later a hit for PJ Proby]

11 Walking in the park, it wasn't quite dark Um, Um, Um, Um, Um, Um, Major Lance: TG

12 The angels picked her for their friend - Shangs - I Can Never Go Home Any More: Twang

13 It may have run into some turbulent weather Everly Brothers, Ebony Eyes: TG

14 With half a mind you laugh at me [early psych classic involving Vietnam draft-dodgers]

15 since the day I saw you / I have been waiting for you - Ronettes, Be My Baby: pcqgod

16 Owsley and Charlie, twins of the trade/ Come to the Poet's Room Jefferson Airplane, Mexico: Charlie

17 Their dicks droop like lilacs - Patti Smith, Piss Factory: Tom Waits for No Man

18 how ya gonna make some time / When all you got is one thin dime? Drifters, On Broadway: borofan

19 Grabbed her and I kissed her / Boy I was surprised when I saw her little sister Jerry Byrne, Lights Out: TG

20 The words you sang, I can't figure out / But you've got a sound, make me stomp and shout The Rivingtons, Papa Oom Mow Mow; Charlie O

Have fun

Number 5 is Phil Ochs' Miranda. Puzzled me for a second, as I was thinking it had to be from something more famous.

And 8 is Puff TMD - as he's known on da street.
Like fast-moving clouds casting shadows against a hillside, the melody-loop shuddered with a sense of the sublime, the awful unknowable majesty of the world.

Yep, that's two of them. I knew you would be the one to get Miranda, the only Phil Ochs single I own

4. "Little Old Lady from Pasadena" Jan & Dean
Where would rock 'n' roll be without feedback?

This one was driving me crazy -
13-Ebony Eyes-Everly Bros.
And 14 could be Sonny Bono but it would seem too obvious.
