Jonathan Edwards - Sometimes: yea or nay?

Postby fange » 11 Jul 2018, 02:21

'Sometimes' is off Jonathan Edwards' debut LP, released late in '71 -

Edwards is maybe best known these days for his song 'Sunshine', which reached the U.S. Billboard Top 10 in early '72, and is off his debut album too.

*What do you think, like or don't like?

*Any favourite Edwards songs or albums?

I’m a huge fan of Edwards in general and this album in particular.

This song is lovely, but there are several I like better on the album.

I'm a big fan of the first and like the second too. Some wonderful playing on both, especially Bill Keith's guitar and banjo.

What should i listen to after those Davey?

“Have a Good Time For Me” is really good. After that, there are lots of strong tracks you could compile - but the albums are uneven.

I have a little bit of a soft spot for the first album, which my older brother had at the time. I myself had the "Sunshine"/"Emma" 45, and I still like both songs.

That said, I had completely forgotten this song - and I mean completely, as in: it sounds in no way familiar to me. If you hadn't told me it was on that album, I wouldn't have known. I'm afraid it does no more for me now than it apparently did before!

Yep, good songs. That first album is a real personal fave, i keep coming back to it year after year.

Never heard of him, but that was surprisingly listenable. I expected some lumpen blues rock thing given the picture and Davey's approval.

I really like the debut - but my favourite Jonathan Edwards moment is Train of Glory on the Mar Y Sol Festival sampler.

... and Sometimes is also on there:

Do I generally approve of 70s blues rock?

You've obviously never heard his cover of Never on a Sunday.

To be fair, I was hoping you wouldn't take offence at that, because I enjoy your writing. I just know that if see a great write-up from yourself, it's generally going to be everything I don't like about music in a nutshell. Which isn't necessarily 70s blues rock, but it's unlikely to be modern and wildly experimental.

No offense taken at all!

I don’t mind being portrayed as stuck in the mud. I probably am. But not that particular mud. ;)
