Re: Mitch Mitchell v. Ginger Baker
MM is awesome but I'm voting Baker. yeah, okay "plodding", whatever. you either think it's bitchin' drumming or you don't. I most certainly do.
you ever see any of those "drum battle" things? I goddam LOVE those things. while framed as a competition the drummers take turns showing off and then usually do a big finish together. they are communicating!! goose pimple stuff.
I like in "beware mr. baker" when the guy tells him some people say Moon and Bonaham were as good as him and he says something like "well, if you'd have asked THEM..." LOL. yeah, he's not a humble man but he's a monster fuckin' drummer regardless of who thinks so.

Re: Mitch Mitchell v. Ginger Baker
Strictly considering Cream drumming vs Hendrix drumming, it's nearly a tie. Mitchell is more of a light touch, his flurries really dance around Jimi's leads. It's one of my favorite point-counterpoint, guitar-drum things. Baker is more heavy handed and unpredictable. Both are just super. I might shade it to Mitchell based solely on the studio recording of Manic Depression.
From the little I know of Baker's post-Cream stuff though, I think he wasvery likely the more accomplished and open-ended player. I never heard Mitchell play in any other situation though. I don't remember that he did any significant music after Hendrix's death.
I would like to hear a Minutemen style version of Moby Dick that lasts less than a minute. I guess it's possible, just hit the "stop" button on the CD player before that interminable hammering begins. I imagine Bonham hitting a rack tom like a boxer with his punching bag.

Almost exactly what you describe is on the New Fancy Edition of LZII...it's great!
minute and a half long!
Let U be the set of all united sets, K be the set of the kids and D be the set of things divided.
Then it follows that ∀ k ∈ K: K ∈ U ⇒ k ∉ D
Then it follows that ∀ k ∈ K: K ∈ U ⇒ k ∉ D

Mitchell's good, but he always struck me as too much Keith Moon Jr.
I'd say Mitchell and Moon had pretty distinct styles, although both played very "busy" parts. Mitchell played the more intricate arrangements, like that cymbal work you hear on "Third Stone," while Moon just would have been smashing the thing. Of course, Baker had a very distinctive style which was completely unlike the other two.

I've only really heard Cream, and The Experience just makes them sound flat and out-of-date. I do enjoy not liking Ginger. He really is full of himself. He should join The Verve.
They could do Vapors' covers.

Very specious comparison. Mitchell had obvious jazz chops, was light and dropped appropriate fills. Moon dropped bombs all over the place and was amphetamine-busy.
Goodness gracious me.

Baker certainly wasn’t helped by the extremely poor production on Cream’s albums, particularly Disraeli Gears. It sounds like he’s hitting wet cardboard.
