Re: Ruby Tuesday lyrics
She would never say where she came from
"Yesterday don't matter if it's gone"
While the sun is bright
Or in the darkest night
No one knows
She comes and goes
Goodbye, Ruby Tuesday
Who could hang a name on you
When you change with every knew day
Still, I'm gonna miss you
Don't question why she needs to be so free
She'll tell you it's the only way to be
She just can't be chained
To a life where nothing's gained
And nothing's lost
At such a cost
(chorus)
"There's no time to lose," I heard her say
"Catch your dreams before they slip away
Dying all the time
Lose your dreams and you
Will lose your mind
Ain't life unkind?"
(chorus x 2)
"Yesterday don't matter if it's gone"
While the sun is bright
Or in the darkest night
No one knows
She comes and goes
Goodbye, Ruby Tuesday
Who could hang a name on you
When you change with every knew day
Still, I'm gonna miss you
Don't question why she needs to be so free

Re: Ruby Tuesday lyrics
There probably aren't a lot of other Stones lyrics I could do that with, actually.

I always thought the last line was "...in life unkind."
Where would rock 'n' roll be without feedback?

I always thought it was 'is life unkind?' !

Re: Ruby Tuesday lyrics
It could be "in life unkind" - that's what I always thought growing up. But at some point a few years ago "ain't" occurred to me, and it seemed to make more sense so I went with it.

It's one of the few songs I can sing all the way through.

She would never say where she came
(improbably low note that he never returns to)
FROM
Yesterday don't matter if it's gone.
I black out there, I'm afraid (darkest night, sun burns bright?), but come back strong for the chorus and subsequent verses
I'm guessing "Don't question why..." is the second and "There's no time..." is the third (only because "lose your mind" kind of sounds like the finale of something).

Yes!
What prompted the thread was this recent(ish) Hyde Park concert and they pulled this one out of the bag among all the rockers. Jagger was weirder (and skinnier) than I've ever seen him.

It sounds like he swallows the mic.

Re: Ruby Tuesday lyrics
now THAT would be a sight...
When did Charlie stop with the rat-a-tat-a-tat-a, by the way? It's all over 'Get Off Of My Cloud', here just before the chorus (and after every line in it) and in several other 60s tunes - but never after 1969 (as far as I know). And live there are no flourishes - it's four-square and proud.
Did he suddenly think it was effete around the turn of the decade? or is it just that he can't return to the beat afterwards?

Re: Ruby Tuesday lyrics
I feel like Charlie's mostly been on auto-pilot since the mid-'70s. Part of what makes their golden period golden is that he generally sounds creatively invested, as opposed to sounding like he's repeatedly punching a time clock.

Re: Ruby Tuesday lyrics
I'm glad you agree! I always get the impression he's one of the most respected drummers, but that's probably more to do with his suits and his standing up to Jagger...
