But if the Jap chap in question is already wanking - that ruins the metaphor, surely? And does anyone squint while wanking, if the footage isn't pixelated?

50/50 between shit and hit. This poll needs two questions. Shit/hit onan/non-onan anana nana nana hey hey hey, goodbye.

It was pretty big in my pre-shook-up-by-Dog Eat Dog world.

Fuck all to do with the Mod revival though.

Foxton and Weller Sr proteges. Close enough for me. I'm pretty sure it was mentioned at the time, too, althoiugh they might just have been hitching a ride on the Merton Parkas bandscooter.
And, as a general principle, anyone identifying themselves as a 'modernist' (oh the irony) after about 1964 or so is/was a wanker in my book.

You’re a Lambretta man then? Good choice.

Just sitting back and enjoying the ride. It's been a while now since I finally disabused myself of the notion that I was driving the thing.
And if it's all the same to you, I prefer an RTW to an RM: roomier seats (confession time: I was an adolescent bus-spotter)

I prefer this version

Yeah, my feeling as well. Not any sort of personal favorite, but..tightly wound, spiky, new wave era bubblegum that occasionally works (sub-Knack?).

the lyrics describe a guy surrounded by pics of a girl he fancies and he's "turning Japanese", I fail to see what else it could be about unless he's practising origami

But "turning Japanese" in no way describes masturbation, isn't/wasn't common slang, and doesn't provide a reasonable metaphor for a vinegar strokes facial expression. Photo obsession = slightly racist allusion to Japanese tourists. It seems much more likely to me. "I often kiss you when there's no-one else around" seems a very slight confession from someone who's supposedly singing about spurting his filthy yoghurt around the place.

It was common slang when I was a youth, though I’m not sure if that was before of after the song was a hit

The alternative ‘real’ slang term where I come from was ‘turning Korean’ , if that helps.

It's good, though no better than dozens of other 'new wave' songs from that era.

It's funny how many confident nitwits in high school back then used to say "you know that's British slang for jerking off." I never believed it--seemed too complicated and I couldn't imagine anybody ever saying it. She caught him turning Japanese watching Charile's Angels. Nope.

Song was about proving that "Nyooo Wive" could be as lame as everything else on the radio.
