Questions for Steve Hackett

Postby Hugh » 21 Jun 2018, 08:05

I may have the opportunity to interview Steve Hackett over the phone.

What should I ask him?

Try to keep the nonsense to a minimum, please :D

Damn, that was the first thing I'd have asked him.
Like fast-moving clouds casting shadows against a hillside, the melody-loop shuddered with a sense of the sublime, the awful unknowable majesty of the world.

Which African guitarist, or world string musician has influenced the way he looks at the guitar?

Does he play any other indigenous string instruments besides the guitar, like a sitar or kora?

Does he appreciate how his hand tapping techniques were expanded upon in the larger rock framework?

Do he and Steve Howe continue to talk?

Describe the relationship when he and Steve Howe play together?

Does he use any other instruments as inspiration when he plays guitar?

Are there any current guitarists he likes? Pat Metheny, etc.

What does he think of Tony Mcmanus?

Does he believe he needs to release new albums now that his Genesis Revisited-gigs are much more popular?

How does he enjoy being part of the Rock Cruise-set?

He's been doing live guest spots with different bands over the years, which one does he enjoy the best?

Can you give me some examples of the bands that he has guested with, Maarts? The Musical Box was one, I think?

He played with Dave Kerzner last year on stage, just the one track though. I'm sure he's done a few more in the last few years but I can't think of them right now.

In the early solo years, before getting your band together, you worked with a number of individual singers (Phil Collins, Richie Havens, Randy Crawford, Steve Walsh). Were there any others who you intended or wanted to work with, but didn't get the chance to?

Have you ever wanted to do a soundtrack? Some of your music seems like it would be great for it. (Looks like there might have been a few episodes of a 1981 TV show called Second Chance that he did some music for. I'm not familiar with it.)

Who'd win in a fight between Peter Gabriel and Tony Banks?

What was the closest you came to punching Tony Banks in the face?

I'm not aware of that and have never heard of that TV series.

I’m thinking more like: Have you ever had a Christmas card from Tony Banks?

Did you ever get a bit bored playing the same four notes over and over again* on the Coral Sitar during I know What I Like?

*The ability to do this for the sake of the song without going off into some godawful solo makes him a great guitarist in my book.

Also,

Did you enjoy playing with Liz Fraser at her only live outing in a couple of decades - how did that come about?
I've been talking about writing a book - 25 years of TEFL - for a few years now. I've got it in me.

GTR vs Squackett

Which of your terrible side projects with members of Yes are you most embarrassed by?

And will we get 'Hackman' when Rick gets bored of Jon Anderson again?

Where was the back cover of Please Don't Touch shot? Unlike the inside pictures, it doesn't look like Santa Monica Pier. :?:

What have you written that gives you the most pride?

An obvious question but one that often comes up with surprising answers.

coversely, what are you most embarrassed by? (hopefully the answer is GTR)
