Re: new McCartney
I'm not sure exactly which pricks you believe yourself to be valiantly kicking against, John.
I can't think of many things much more perfunctory and impotent than railing against some legacy artist making his 500th record (a vanity project, by any measure) as he approaches senility. Nobody here is saying "That new McCartney is going to be the fucking BUSINESS!!!!" Nobody thinks it, nobody even believes it to be within the realm of probability.
Americans OR Britons.
I think there's loads of "fuckers some other person inexplicably likes" who should have stopped before they even started. People like McCartney, on the other hand...he's given me so much over a lifetime that I don't begrudge him his own joys in old age. Also, it must be said that those of us who ever cared one way or another generally started kicking him many decades ago (raises hand).
Your own twisted love/hate relationship with the likes of U2 and REM is absolutely your own business, but...it's the first thing my mind goes to when you start talking about whatever it is you're talking about here (subversiveness, mainstream, dull, successful).

Ah, yeah. I talk a lot of nonsense and contradict myself all over the place. I know.
Maybe I shouldn't have ranted on this thread specifically - altho' the reactions are typical of the kind of thing I'm blathering on about. I just like to read people attack these beloved artists as much as praise them, as pointless as that might seem to you. It can be entertaining, it's usually fair. If we don't get these contrary views (and I don't mean some kind of hoary old 'punk' shouting 'old cunts' or whatever - which I imagine you imagine me to be ) then these threads get pretty boring to read. To some. Like I said.
It's not like I begrudge McCartney anything, and as you know he's given me a fuckload of pleasure over the years too. I just find a lot there to laugh at and a lot there - in his music - to dislike these days. He's a funny old bird.
And I do find this kind of mean-spiritedness more typical of Brits than Americans, for what that's worth. It's a national sport.
But much like McCartney, I'm singing an old tune here.

It's the old NME "praise 'em to the heavens" when they first show up, then when they get too big for their britches, you gotta knock 'em back down.
I tend to think it's generally bullshit at both ends.

Keep in mind also that the publication that's most guilty of praising new albums by our classic rock heroes isn't Rolling Stone any more - it's Mojo.

Fair enough - I'm just saying 'twas ever thus. We may have less curmudgeons but only 'cause we have less people in general. And some of the people I miss the most - Fred, Balboa, the Cosmic American Feebs - weren't even that cranky (OK, Feeb was - man what a hilarious fucker that guy was and I presume still is. Man, I miss him!)

Well fuck...I don’t know what people want me to say here?
Shall I be blandly approving or predictably dismissive? Hmmm...so many options.

Not remotely.
Not here, not anywhere.
There are reflexive (nay tourettic) forms of both abrasiveness and blandness in "internet society" that are, at their very core, as inorganic as they are predictable. I regularly wince to see both. Especially when you can sort of hear the train pulling into the station. They may even become ineffectual with repeat usage. And I'm kind of looking at myself when I say this. Why, you know - I don't even bother stopping to belittle certain venerated acts anymore...and that seems alternately refreshing and depressing. For everything gained, something is lost.
I get your larger point. I fidget a fair bit when I can't find the cool side of the pillow.
I can't manufacture the balance I seek in life, but I do demand it.
I just find a lot there to laugh at and a lot there - in his music - to dislike these days. He's a funny old bird.
Absolutely. UNIQUELY "fruity". Perhaps always so to some degree, but...age seldom flatters a series of unseemly quirks.

Most enjoyable. That pub audience lady crying during Hey Jude really got to me.

Hmm, good point but I’ll bet a thread on Rolling Stone’s ranking of every Taylor Swift song would get a lot of action.

Re: new McCartney
It’s his line of work. He still shows up in the charts. I don’t give a shit about the charts but that’s not my line of work. Maybe in his 90’s he’ll tinker in the shed but, for now, whatever he does has some sort of value in the marketplace.
You hear it — you like it or you don’t. You think it sucks or that he’s shallow — fine. That’s a valid opinion. He’ll sit in the rocking chair when he’s ready. Me, maybe I’m ready. I’d rather listen to Cramps than McCartney today but I am a wheezy old bastard who treats music like comfort food. One man’s gruel is another man’s porridge.

Re: new McCartney
Just read the thread...I can understand John's frustration in many ways!
It's as bland and uninspired as music can get really and I wonder what the point is. But I guess these people aren't going to be around much longer so there's a kind of goodwill towards them, which is understandable in many ways. And given that he's releasing music at a time when most of it doesn't matter at all then I guess it just another 'thing' to fall into this vacuum of a cultural activity that doesn't have much meaning or relevance anymore. It's difficult to take a stance on it.
