Day-job payoff! Got an employee rate on the Super-Deluxe. Ordered today. I won't tell you how good the discount was, but let's just say that it's substantial...

I wait for a price in two digits maximum (it happened with Pepper, eventually)

Terrific. I love the woozy production of the finished version that ended up on The White Album, but it's a shame they couldn't have retained a bit more of the bite of this.
One of the hallmarks of Lennon's songs from The White Album is how angry he sounds on much of it, such a contrast to his songwriting of 67.

Interesting, isn't it, considering he wrote so many of them whilst in Rishikesh practicing TM.

It IS interesting, yes.
I'm not sure how much he bought into all that TM stuff. He wasn't a man entirely at peace with himself back then, I think. Maybe those songs were a manifestation of his anger towards all the Maharishi-led bullshit.
A lot of my favourite Beatles' music is Lennon's work from 1967 and 1968 - they didn't get much stranger and they didn't get much harder-hitting. In a sense I think they needed his scepticism more as a counter to all the hippy philosophising that was de rigeur at the time.

I wish they'd gone for that arrangement, I think it would have made for a more touching track than the one we did get with the lush orchestration.

I bought the 2 CD Pepper, but have decided to sit this one out. Only attraction on the affordable set is the Esher demos, and I was never big on demos. Only if they are fleshed out, and never made it to final studio recordings. Pepper had alternates to lure me, plus the double A-side, but TWA only has those demos, unless I fork over £100 plus.

Jesus Christ - discs 4-6 are a fucking revelation of the highest order!
More later, but...my sense of ever having "heard it all" has been re-calibrated pretty seriously.
Essential.
