Synth-pop it ain’t! Off the top of my head I think Attack Decay is the track I like best. Rental and Leer both did some good solo stuff. I really like Double Heart by Rental. And, International by Thomas Leer (not the one on his first single) is wonderful. It has a really fab extended outro. On a Fairlight, apparently. It feels like he’s trapped in a two-chord synth-labyrinth. I especially love the way it slinks up and weaves its way into things. It starts at about 4:21 but of course you have to hear the whole track to fully appreciate it!

I loved OMD and saw them umpteen times in their heyday.

Dare by The HL is one of the greatest albums ever made.


I would also endorse John Foxx - many fine albums

I would tend to agree re: genres, however, I’m getting into synthesisers, for my own amusement, and want to explore some early stuff- before it all got ‘dancey’.

Any latter day suggestions also welcome, so long as I don’t have to do some drugs to appreciate it...

Yeah, he's very good. Ultravox were great when he was with them. Much more interesting band.

Depeche Mode are the best band of the 80's. From the rest I quite like OMD and really dislike The Human League.

New Order's Power Corruption & Lies is a high point for me.

It all went a bit down hill with the rise of digital synthesis - nasty clangy DX7 patches :x
I've been talking about writing a book - 25 years of TEFL - for a few years now. I've got it in me.

What are the unique characteristics of FM sounds?
For that matter, what are the ‘classic’ sounds of other synths that I should be listening for?
I’m familiar with some names- ARPs, Prophets, Moogs, but I don’t necessarily have a sound in my head that epitomises those synths.

FM allowed for much more percussive sounds that analogue subtractive synthesis couldn’t manage.

So lots of bell and gamelan-type stuff but also some nasty things like the accordion on Lloyd Cole’s Brand New Friend.

It all seemed like a step backwards.

To be fair the DX7 and it’s Yamaha FM brethren were very powerful machines it’s just that no one could be arsed to program them because they were so complicated. So the presets were all you’d hear. With good old analogue you’d just tweak a slider or two.

I had a Casio FM machine which I sold to get my first six string. It could do that VH Jump brass to a tee and the bass line to West End Girls :lol:

You mention Moog and ARP.
A good example of these to is Are Friends Electric?
The Moog does the main melody while the ARP does the soaring portmento notes.

Mini and Odessey respectively.
