Re: Black Sabbath v Deep Purple v Led Zeppelin
I own every Zep record, even the bad ones. For me they "rock" the most of the three because that's far from all they do, if that makes any sense.
Sabbath kind of passed me by on the first go-round for some reason. No huge Sabbath fans among my friends when I was young. I'm appreciating them more now, and actually like most of them - particularly the first few - but they're not in my consciousness in general as much as the other two.
Deep Purple I DID know and like 'at the time', but I've gone the other way with them - there's very few songs that do much for me. The playing's great, but usually in the service of stuff that doesn't interest me that much. Best singer of the three groups, though, I will say.

Black Sabbath and Deep Purple are not in Zeps league really but they both had their moments.

People always claimed Soundgarden were a Zeppelin cover band after they released Louder than Love, but I always thought Sabbath were more of a musical influence for Kim Thayil.
I bet most metal bands these days would claim Sabbath as a huge influence rather than Zeppelin. And Deep Purple wouldn't even be in the conversation.

I've never been that impressed by Deep Purple but I love Highway Star. That's a classic Rock record in the very best way. Ridiculous and huge fun.
I think by the time Soundgarden got to Superunknown there was a definite Zep influence.
Sabbath don't mean that much to me anymore but Wheels of Confusion, for one, is a mighty record. Ozzy is the weaklink

Re: Black Sabbath v Deep Purple v Led Zeppelin
Deep Purple have the best singer, and maybe the best drummer. But also the least-reliable material.
Zeppelin tick all the boxes, there's nothing wrong with them really.
Sabbath are the most unique - the most singular and unprecedented. There was not music like that until they made it, and then, suddenly yet gradually, it was everywhere.

I agree with most of what have been said and voted for Zep. What about Uriah Heep, are they worth any kind of redemption?

I love Rod Evans' voice but Ronnie James Dio is the best of the lot of these three bands

Uriah Heap do not belong in this kind of company, not by a long way.

Re: Black Sabbath v Deep Purple v Led Zeppelin
I like all three equally, and always have, though I suppose Led Zeppelin have more about them.
The Purps were absolutely the best live act of the three though.
If I could hop the time machine back to 1972, they'd be my pick to go see.

Sabbath are a 3/10 band for me, which means they win this shitrockfest comfortably.

As ever, I'm voting Atari Teenage Riot.

Must be the reason they seemed to put out a live album every other year.

Yep.
'Speed King', too. In fact In Rock altogether is a fine album. Even ridiculous drawn-out bawlfests like 'Child In Time' have an appealingly moody quality.

Yep. I can't think of anything by them I like more. 'Paranoid' still sounds ace, tho'. It's actually not like anything else they did. I wish I'd have known that before I shelled out for the first four albums
