Gerry Rafferty - Baker Street: Yea or Nay?
The worldwide smash from '78.
Darkness_Fish has told me many times how much he loves it, but what do YOU think about it, BCB?

I wonder how people would react if something REALLY great was posted. Are there superlatives enough for you?
It's OK - way too long, and it gets by mostly on atmosphere. There's an undeniable mood to the thing. But that's what you get with James Dean posters and cafes that play Wynton Marsalis and it's all pretty shallow.
Another one for fans of Top Gear.
Can we talk about Pere Ubu now?

Oh, it's sublime. I've run it into the ground over 40 years, but it really is an improbable series of incredibly correct (and unlikely) production/arrangement instincts/choices. He probably could have been "the Scottish Wings" if he'd wanted.
The depressive middle aged alcoholic ennui it conjures is...well, "moving" is probably the word I'm looking for.

Every time I hear it I wonder why I'm not sick to death of it. But I'm not.

A technicolour masterpiece - groovy arrangement, translucent yet weighty textures. Peak 70s.
It takes a big man to cry, but it takes a bigger man to laugh at that man.

Cheers fange, sorry about the number of messages, begging for this to be discussed.
Great work on the vibraphone from Leslie Crowther.

Like fast-moving clouds casting shadows against a hillside, the melody-loop shuddered with a sense of the sublime, the awful unknowable majesty of the world.
