In the U.K. at least I’m sure there’s still an unbelieving rump that’ll never hear the Beach Boys with anything other than Fun Fun Fun ears. For people like me who came to them via Smile bootlegs it’s impossble not to take a knee and just marvel, especially when you hear the 68-73 stuff with Carl, Dennis & co building on what came before and making glorious adult pop music.
It takes a big man to cry, but it takes a bigger man to laugh at that man.

I just can't admire Paul Simon's songwriting the way some people are here.

It feels like prep-school "poety" stuff that's just nice and sensitive ("and you read your Emily Dickinson...and I my Robert Frost") without being very powerful or distinguished at all, and the sound and melodies of the songs are of exactly the same order. It's full of pretty sentiments and "melancholy" in a way that makes me want to strangle the little guy.

Brian Wilson, there's nothing for me to say. So exciting and unexpected. He's a nut and a great one, I love him all the way, even the stupid stuff.

I could defend Simon for the very reasons many knock him. Why bother since I’ve voted for Brian? Maybe he burned out quick but he sure burned brightly.

They're considered music.
And it's not like Simon didn't use the device.

Simon -- among the greatest of mortal song-crafters.

Wilson has a bit more personal resonance for me, and for a time, was on an almost cosmic level. So, him.

Paul over Brian

Brian had his moments, Paul simon had a career.

There were summers, when I was a kid, that I remember pretty much LIVING OFF my Simon & Garfunkel records. Simon was a constant presence when I was growing up, one of those guys whose new record I'd always check out, usually to my enjoyment. He's great.

Brian Wilson though, is somebody whose work I revere and obsessively consume in my adulthood. A little less now than in my 30s, but his best stuff still resonates like hell for me. As Quaco says, he is on or near a cosmic level.

I got to see Paul and Brian perform together, summer of 2002. Brian had just started to introduce Smile stuff to his set list - Our Prayer, Heroes & Villains and Surf's Up - and I found it so wonderful and unexpected, I bought a scalped ticket for the next night's show. As for Simon live - the first night, we watched about an hour and decided to split early. Almost every song played was from Graceland or later albums, and it was not all that exciting. The second night, I left before he started playing and gave my ticket one of Brian's band members I had been chatting with. It was fine, just a little too "Adult Contemporary" for me. Had I made it to the encore, when Paul McCartney came out to duet with him, I'm sure I would have enjoyed seeing that, but oh well.

Of course , he just didn't make it all of the music all of the time.
