Your old musical prejudices

Postby KeithPratt » 09 Jun 2018, 12:32

Anybody playing fretless bass guitar high up is a massive twat, and by association, the band they are in and the music they are making is shit.

I was bloody awful when I was 18.

So you have revised this opinion?

More than four strings on the bass makes my blood run cold.

Have you ever played a bass with the low string detuned a step? Did you find it nice to have that low D at your disposal? Or is it just the visual impact?

Musically, for all that it indicates/warns, it may as well be a HAZMAT sign.

Yeah, it's usually the sort of players who would want one of these things. I've never even played one, but I've often thought how convenient it would be to go below the bottom E sometimes. C# was enough, though - B was like pushing it past the realm of credibility. Detuning the string was sufficient for my own needs.

Yeah, that's it in a nutshell.

But now you're fine with wearing them?

I've been thinking about this for a while, trying to figure out if I have any hard and fast musical prejudices these days, but I really haven't been able to pinpoint any.

Strings, electronics and drum machines, reggae rhythms, jazz stylings, disco and dance music, 80s production, lo-fi, blues rock, free jazz, "unique" vocalists etc. - none of them are total deal breakers, and the same goes for any genres I can think of.

It wasn't always like that, but my tastes have grown and evolved a lot.

I still have all of my old musical prejudices- and continue to add new ones!

No way! Being musically selective but open, fine; being musically closed off and prejudiced, unrewarding.

I’m more close minded now than I was 30 years ago, but I prefer to think that I’m more “focused.”

When you consider the meaning of the word, how likely are we to be prejudiced to any musical form? or artist?

How much music have we heard, over the years?

Everything is a matter of degrees. Being too open-minded is as bad as being too closed off. Part of living is learning. Learning is ultimately about discrimination.

At some level - I generally find declarations of musical open-mindedness to be a bit annoying. You find the good in the latest Jason Mraz album. I only have a finite time on this planet.

I still won't do the Beastie Boys. Changed my mind on Jesus and Mary Chain, Sonic Youth and AC/DC.
