If we take in their whole artistry, Smith just passes Harry up by more. Despite what’s been claimed here, Blondie aren’t even that much fun.

Well, the discussion was about a lot more than just the singing.

I think Smith worked harder at being an ‘artist’, but that doesn’t mean she was better at it.

oh my you all make it sound like Patti was a prog rocker and Blondie was god. Boys stop voting with your d*cks.
As a fan of both, who saw them 40+ years ago I'm sorry we disagree. Patti had all the emotion, angst and heart driven performances as Ms Harry.
When you walked out of a Patti show you wanted to kick some asshole in the street in the balls. Blondie had a charm to her performance there was something mystical in the way she sung and the way she looked at you in the audience almost like she could put a spell on you. Plus yes she was fun and pretty and pulled you into her world. Patti also played more to her band while we always felt Debbie was the show although we love her band too. However, it was the Debbie show and she barely acknowledge or looked at the band.

As far as ranking:
All four of Patti's first albums are all better than anything Blondie ever accomplished(Parallel lines and Plastic letters are their best). Much more interesting lyrics and music.
Blondie has excellent pop songs, dreamy lyrics but her full albums were not as good.
Harry had the nicer voice but I thought Patti in the early days had more angst. Harry at times seemed hollow.
Both bands are about the same in different ways so I'll call a draw there.

Yeah we get the Patti became this cool hipster for some weird reason as her lyrics took a cool factor with them. Plus all the Tibet and other charity-like work she has done. However, I'm leaving that out of the equation.

I'll also disagree with Blondie winning a greatest hits album too.

Patti Patti Patti.

Part of Smith’s artistry was that she redefined the whole idea of femininity. So it feels beyond stupid and insulting to dignify the arguments based on appearance.

But I will say this about it. If Debbie Harry had looked like Patti Smith, we’d never have heard of her.
The opinions of this poster are subjective. That’s how opinions work.

This thread isn’t “rank these artists voices II” is it?

To explain how they affected you without mentioning their sexuality seems a bit odd when discussing pop music*, especially when some of them (Ant, Lydia Lunch) were explicit in their use of sexual imagery.

Patti herself was photographed by Mapplethorpe, a bloke who shot flowers so they appeared like boners and wide ons and a penchant for muscular buttocks or whips up the aris. She talked about how seeing the Stones on TV as a kid had given her her first ‘gob of glooie in her virgin panties’.

*particularly pop music that hit you at an early, unsophisticated age.

To a degree, sure. But this is an old BCB argument - rock and roll should radiate fun/sex vs. rock and roll should be transcendent (which may or may not include notions or artiness or maturity or whatever dirty word you want to associate).

To be fair to Coan I'm fairly confident he'd make the same argument were it Elvis vs. Bill Haley or the Big Bopper or something.

Part of what the Patti fans are expressing (I think...) is that she managed to be transcendent without needing to be anybody's teenage crush to do so. Whether that was all that Debbie had, is of course a whole 'nother argument. And not one I meant to bring up, but here we are.

Christ, is there any subject that the fat boy/hatz school of doing music right won’t granola the fuck out of?

Easter’s nipple/hairy pit combo gave me the fucking horn. And I enjoyed her poetry.

A woman no less, what are the chances?

BCB will always be skewed towards the priapic response because it’s membership (oo-er) is nearly all men.

Rolleyes for what?

Show me threads where someone on here compares one male artist as being fabulous and handsome, and their “peer” as being hideous and unsightly.

Oh, fuck off.

First off, there is no Fat Boy/Hatz school. We are completely different people, and a quick perusal will show we disagree plenty.

Sure, be honest about thinking with your dick if that's what you do. But spare me the binary bullshit. There are plenty of women here and plenty of men that want to talk about other subjects besides Meg White's tits (still the biggest - oo-er - thread dedicated to a female musician on here, I believe).
