Your favorite albums of 1992

Postby pcqgod » 03 Jun 2018, 13:43

Might have been a few BBC actually likes from this year.

Some that I played often at the time:

Afghan Whigs - Congregation
Curve - Doppelganger
Flaming Lips - HIt to Death in the Future Head
Bongwater - The Big Sell Out
Where would rock 'n' roll be without feedback?

Spooky - Lush
Check Your Head- Beastie Boys
Incesticide - Nirvana
Safari (EP) - Breeders

I was assuredly buying and listening like a (22 year old) person with more money than sense (this year's Sonic Youth, Ride, Black Crowes, etc. records now seem like pure flash paper), but I'm not seeing a ton of memories evoked (the previous year may have cast something of a shadow/hangover into this one...Bandwagonesque, Loveless, etc.)

Looks a pretty good year to me, the top 3 are rarely off regular rotation for long, and there are albums in the honourable mentions which I deeply love.

1. Current 93 - Thunder Perfect Mind
2. Front 242 - Live Target
3. Alice Donut - The Untidy Suicides of Your Degenerate Children
4. Coil - Stolen and Contaminated Songs
5. Death in June - But, What Ends When the Symbols Shatter?
6. The Tear Garden - The Last Man to Fly
7. Swans - Love of Life
8. Skinny Puppy - Last Rights
9. Phew - Our Likeness
10. Laibach - Kapital

HMs:
The Legendary Pink Dots - Shadow Weaver
Paul Lemos - Phlegm Dive
Main - Hydra-Calm
Nurse With Wound - Sugar Fish Drink (A Layman's Guide to Cod Surrealism)
Nurse With Wound - Thunder Perfect Mind
Pigface - Fook
Shinjuku Thief - The Scribbler
Bad Religion - Generator
My Dying Bride - As the Flower Withers
Eric B. & Rakim - Don't Sweat the Technique
Ministry - ΚΕΦΑΛΗΞΘ [Psalm 69]
KMFDM - Money
Skinny Puppy - Back and Forth Series Two
Like fast-moving clouds casting shadows against a hillside, the melody-loop shuddered with a sense of the sublime, the awful unknowable majesty of the world.

These were all big ones for me that year.

I'd say Dr. Dre's The Chronic and the Lemonheads Shame About Ray were the one I listened to the most though.

Dre (as well as Beastie Boys 'Check your head') would have shown up if I had given a 30 list...Lemonheads, heard once and never stuck with me...

This and Good Morning Mazatlan are my definite favorites. I think Kiko would be considered their best.

Kiko is the album of the year by many miles.

Triage by David Baerwald is a distant second, though it was released in October and took a while to be heard, so I'll always think of it as '93.

There's also this one, which only I (and maybe Corporate Whore) give a flying fuck about:

Absolutely. I sure loved Last Splash at the time (and what a concert that was), but - both then and now - it seems like the sort of "hangover" from Safari.
