He'd definitely be considered blue-eyed soul but I don't think there are many fans of his era of the Doobie Bros. and solo stuff. I have a couple of his Motown covers albums and they're a nice diversion every once in awhile.

I have a female friend who sings (professionally) as if she had a mouthful of marbles. Kidding (but not really), I asked if she'd been taking lessons from Michael McDonald.

She took it as a compliment; he's one of her favorite singers.

I thought you'd mention Bill Champlin for sure when I saw you posted.

If The Righteous Brothers are the gold standard on the pop end (they are), Eddie Hinton is the gold standard on the blues end.

The opinions of this poster are subjective. That’s how opinions work.

You see, there are still faint glimmers of civilization left in this barbaric slaughterhouse that was once known as humanity. Indeed that's what we provide in our own modest, humble, insignificant... oh, fuck it.

Erm, clue's the subject heading. By your query you don't see him as possessing these traits?

I was being a little snarky, for which I apologize. While MacKenzie obviously has a great and elastic voice, I don't hear him trying to copy or emulate a soulful voice, for lack of better term, in any way.

It depends on how blue-eyed soul is defined. For me it means bringing something else to soul rather than just emulation. Mackenzie injected a shitload of Bowie histrionics so he counts, although i find him only acceptable in small doses.

I know he means well, but -- to me -- is maybe trying too hard.

You?

I suppose I've long taken the label to be 'white mimicking black', used pejoratively, as if that matters when it comes to singing with emotion and feeling.

Nevertheless, for me, MacKenzie could be argued to fit this term for this reason and the fact that his influences ranged from Dusty, Nina Simone, Bowie (natch), Ferry, Celtic/British folk music, European torch songs, all adding up to that distinctive 'soulful' delivery that affects and moves.

Sloopjohnc nails it: 'elastic'. Maybe there's a new genre, 'elastic soul'?
