Yeah, it's amazing when you think about how prolific he was back then, that there are still "new" things coming out, as well as songs he never even got around to recording at all. I've already pre-ordered a copy.

Giving it a second spin now. This is really nice. 14 songs, 53 minutes. Other than Gene on guitar and singing, the only identified musician is keyboardist Alex Del Zoppo, and for rough demos (recorded at Larrabee and Gold Star Studios in LA), there is enough of that magic that Gene could conjure up so effortlessly back then. The songs vary in quality, but all of it is good, and some of it (e.g. the opening track, On Her Own) is great. If you're a fan of 1967-era Gene, this belongs in your collection.

I've been streaming it in the car since Friday (my pre-ordered LP seems to be travelling at a leisurely pace). It's great, of course. The rough and ready nature of the performances, recordings and arrangements stands in great contrast to his best loved works, but...yeah, over a dozen new songs from an especially strong and fertile period (right after GCWTGB and just before The Fantastic Expedition...). Needless to say, fans of his voice will be delighted.

It's mysterious in its way - the drumming often sounds especially "eh...clearly no one's ever gonna hear this", but then...several songs appear to have strings.

Like most Gene Clark, it insinuates its way into your life. There's the same sort of unassuming modesty that characterizes a lot of his work (barring one or two especially striking songs, nearly everything I've ever loved by him has been "a grower"), and only bit by bit are certain tracks gradually beginning to stand out as uniquely special (and, yes, I can't help but wonder what some of these might have sounded like with the same care his greatest classics were given...fulsome backing vocal harmonies, etc.).

Essential for Gene Clark fans. Possibly "more of the same", but his "same" was pretty fantastic at this stage.

The Sierra disc is good, but this one has more of the Gene that brings a tear to your eye. Both are worth having.

I grabbed this LP on Amazon after reading this thread and wondering why I hadn't already jumped on it.

Listening to Side Two right now. Which is utterly fantastic.

But...this may be the most hideous artwork I've ever seen on such a prestigious collection. I'm sure my delayed purchase comes down to the powerful graphic deterrent.

He was so prolific that he had loads of songs, possibly a couple hundred, that he would play once and never record. If I could go back in time, I'd ask him if I could follow him around with a tape recorder and capture everything.

There's a great story in John Einarson's bio Mr. Tambourine Man that illustrates the otherworldly magic Gene was capable of creating. Someone in one of his '60s bands was at Gene's house in Laurel Canyon, working on a new song. They were standing in a tight circle, the drummer banging a tambourine and singing. Once they started to get it down, the guy noticed a white cloud above them, which he took as a sign from God. He said nothing about it, just enjoying what he thought was his personal hallucination (they weren't using drugs that day), and when the song finished, the cloud went "poof" and evaporated. All four of them pointed up at the same time and asked if the others saw it. He said they only played the song that one day, he doesn't even recall knowing if it had a title - it's as though the song only needed to exist long enough for that moment to occur.

Essential for Gene Clark fans. Possibly "more of the same", but his "same" was pretty fantastic at this stage.

With this era of his music, "more of the same" is never enough.
