Sucking in the Seventies
Three soul classics covered by the Stones. Is any of them not a waste of recording time and media?
You may choose only one, but can re-vote if someone makes a convincing argument for another song.

Just My Imagination only half sucks vs. the other ones all the way sucking, so I voted for it.

I actually enjoy their version of "Ain't Too Proud to Beg," and "Just My Imagination" isn't embarrassing. The less said about "Harlem Shuffle," the better.
Where would rock 'n' roll be without feedback?

Re: Sucking in the Seventies
I'll give the schoolboy wisdom this much -- we all know that covers were something the Stones once did well. maybe the Stone who couldn't swim was the reason.
I always liked "Aint Too Proud to Beg" but then this era of the band is very appealing to me. they were more confident than they had any right to be - the material was getting pretty thin. This track sounds like they like the song and I like the track - the corny phase shifting and stuff.
I have it on very good authority that "just my imagination" only half sucks. that sounds about right. I thought "some girls" got a lot more critical boners than it deserved but the band was tight as a monkey's bum even when they seemed to be going through the motions. I really like the wind up towards the end of the track.still, who likes to hear aversion of a song they like that they don't like as well? not me. not often.
the only good I'll say about "Harlem Shuffle" is that it made me reconsider the Bob & Earl track which is killer. The Stones turn killer to MEH as only the Stones can.

Yeah, it's odd how their 60s covers are decent to great. What happened?

Re: Sucking in the Seventies
Here's where someone brings up their awful version of "My Girl." Yep, the majority of their covers suck for most of their career.
That said, I don't hate "Ain't Too Proud to Beg." It's not great, but it's fine.

Any time - at any stage of their career - Jagger is given room to stretch out vocally, it's a fucking disaster. That goes for covers and their own songs.

Oh yeah. One big barrier to enjoyment of any Stones song post about 1971 is the silly voices Jagger chooses to sing most of them in.

Would you include "Sympathy..." in this assessment?

Pain in my Heart?
Fucking dreadful. Their blues covers are decent to great. Their soul and R & B covers are dreadful to decent (Hitch Hike, maybe).
Add Down Home Girl to the list of horrors.

I'm not a huge fan of that one. But there's a lot going on behind the vocal - rhythmically, especially. It seems to spur him on. And the words are important - he's got a lot to get out. So there's less mewling and meowing.
Something like 'Wild Horses', tho' - I can hardly listen.

Re: Sucking in the Seventies
so what made the Fabs' covers so much better? 'Rock and Roll Music', 'You Really Got A Hold On Me', 'Boys', 'Anna' all beat the originals, to my ears.
