It takes a big man to cry, but it takes a bigger man to laugh at that man.

quite obviously
I am not sure I agree. The title tune is certainly an achievement and a landmark in heaviness, but I feel the songwriting on side one ends up outclassing it. "My Mirage" is sublime, the first two songs are pop goodness, and "Are You Happy" is, as they say, slamming!

Re: a challenge
Side 1 starts off strong with "The Letter" and "She Knows How" - then drops sharply, with two covers that compare unfavorably to the originals ("Trains And Boats And Planes", "A Whiter Shade Of Pale"), one that compares favorably but isn't a great song ("Break My Mind", a country hit for George Hamilton IV), and closing with the goopy Penn/Oldham original "Everything I Am". Nothing truly bad, but...
Side 2 is wall-to-wall goodness: shoulda-been-a-hit "Neon Rainbow", superior takes on two Bobby Womack songs ("People Make The World", cut the next year by Wilson Pickett, and "Gonna Find Somebody", released by Womack himself earlier the same year), a rendition of "I'm Your Puppet" that I like at least as much as the James & Bobby Purify hit, the slight but engaging b-side "Happy Times", and closing with the strangely spooky you'll-get-yours ballad "I Pray For Rain". Cut for cut, probably The Box Tops' strongest LP side (Side 1 of Cry Like A Baby is its only real competition).

Monster Movie and Future Days. The side-long tracks that the Bs are probably the two best things they ever did.
But I don't feel the same about Tago Mago.

"Train" is the only song on the album I don't like, so I guess I agree with you... but it's close.
