Artists that went to shit when they changed record labels
It happens, right?
Honestly, the inspiration behind the thread was Ray Charles. His Atlantic stuff is smokin' hot, then suddenly he signs to ABC, goes all uptown, and everything falls off (I'm being a bit harsh here, but whatever).
I had a bunch of examples last night but they've all flown out of my mind.
Little help?

Let U be the set of all united sets, K be the set of the kids and D be the set of things divided.
Then it follows that ∀ k ∈ K: K ∈ U ⇒ k ∉ D
Then it follows that ∀ k ∈ K: K ∈ U ⇒ k ∉ D

I nominate Husker Du, though I would expect some pushback.

All I can think of right now is the opposite scenario.
I'll come back to this.
I'll come back to this.

Apparently Warner’s wanted Flip Your Wig but the Huskers let SST have it. It’s difficult to argue that the actual Warner’s records weren’t anything but ‘variations on a previous theme’ but there’s plenty of songs there that I wouldn’t want to be without.

Their Hibtone era is unarguably superior, for sure.

Ray Charles on ABC is actually on my to buy list. I’m interested. I recall Matt Wilson recommending a double or triple cd. One of these days!

Remember the source.

Aretha didn't exactly go to shit when she left Atlantic and Jerry Wexler but she didn't hit the same heights.

Replacements in a similar situation?
I'm basing this on music nerd chatter...I don't know them well enough to have a firm opinion.

I was elated, however, when Soundgarden left SST. That first SST album sounds like crap.

Of course! I keep trying to give those Arista albums a chance (they're in dollar bins) but I'm invariably very underwhelmed.

There's maybe one album's worth of songs in all the Arista stuff. And Misfits was one of the first albums I bought.

I would argue that their sweet spot straddles the label change - so many other factors to consider...Bob Stinson being THEIR Cliff Burton is one...Westerberg possibly having an extremely brief peak as a songwriter/record maker.

Certainly David Geffen must have felt that Elton John, Donna Summer, Neil Young and Joni Mitchell were all suddenly laying nothing but rotten eggs especially for him and his new label in the early 1980s.

David Geffen is the George Steinbrenner of record label heads.

Yeah I regard Replacements' Let It Be, Tim and Pleased to Meet Me as being of a piece - their "adult but not yet old" period, and I love that stuff. Their three punkier records on Twin Tone are separated on the one side, and their last two Sire albums are on the other side.
I like the punk stuff and the mid period stuff about equally nowadays, they realy expanded their sound without wussing out. Those last two albums seem to be to be rushed, like it was time for a new album so they willed one into being, as well as having much less joie de vivre.
Huskers kind of did go to shit on Warners but I understand why they gave Flip to SST. They'd been super prolific, getting better and better at writing fuzzy pop nuggets. At the time of making Flip Your Wig, it probably feels like the songs are just gonna keep pouring out now that they've hit their stride as a pop group. So they give a goodwill gesture to the label that broke them, and look optimistically to the future on a big label - "now that we have a little support, and some payback for all the hard work, we're gonna write really super great songs!"
That's the purest thing to do, just go into the new situation with no baggage from the past. Unfortunately they had already peaked and just didn't know it yet. I wonder if they had stayed on SST, or moved to another indie label like Restless or Blast First, how those albums would have been different.
