I can't agree they were better this early. Their best period came immediately afterwards, with heaven knows, william, etc. But they are incredibly consistent and strangeways is a tremendous record.

Not the first time I've heard that, but to me it's The Smiths pumped up and polished for the American market. There are good songs there, but they lost a lot.

First album and half dozen singles are definitely the golden period for me.

"Suffer..." has that "autumn leaves" feel of the debut in spades.
