Recommend your "hidden gem" albums for the 1990's

Now the alt-Country shite has blown over don’t the Uncle Tupelo records stand out?

Mostly as evidence of how record critics once wielded great power.

They aren't my favorite thing in the world,* but Uncle Tupelo would've given their left nut for half the "it" the Gourds had.


*In fact, I own no Gourds records, but I can't say the same for UT.

I never warmed to that one myself (despite repeated efforts), but I do consider the preceding run of music leading up (Supersonic Storybook, Stull, Saturation) incredibly special.

Me too. Top notch midwestern rock and roll. On the one hand, I’m happy that their records are so good since they took such a knocking back in the day for being all style. On the other hand, they have next to no legacy, apart from a Neil Diamond cover on the Pulp Fiction soundtrack. The records have been largely forgotten.

99.9% of the time I defer to your opinions because you're knowledgeable about music so I was surprised. i'd agree that Jellyfish never got the wider acceptance they craved and are the ultimate music geek band. They wanted to be the Raspberries on steroids.

Hardly. It’s not as good as Sweet Oblivion though.

I think it is because it is very often overlooked, and I'm not sure you'll ever hear a single song from on it on the radio. If you hear them, you'll hear Nearly Lost You or something else from Sweet Oblivion. And it's strange as it's such an accessible, great-sounding record with their best songs (imo).
