Best act of 1966

Postby Matt Wilson » 16 Apr 2018, 16:46

All right, this year we won't focus on just UK bands. Who made the best music of 1966? I'm going to limit it to 22 acts. I'll nominate The Beatles, Beach Boys, Dylan, Stones, Kinks, Who, Clapton (John Mayall, Cream), Byrds, Simon and Garfunkel, Seeds, Yardbirds, Lovin' Spoonful, Mothers of Invention, Mamas and Papas, Jefferson Airplane, Buffalo Springfield, Monkees, Donovan, Otis, Animals, Elevators, and Love. I'm not going to post every song like last time, just the relevant LP and any stand-alone singles. A weird year, in that almost everybody only released one studio album. You can pick up to five. To wit:

Beatles
Revolver & "Paperback Writer/Rain"

Beach Boys
Pet Sounds & "Good Vibrations"

Dylan
Blonde on Blonde

Stones
Aftermath, Got Live if You Want It! & "19th Nervous Breakdown," "Paint it, Black,"and "Have You Seen Your Mother, Baby, Standing in the Shadow?"

Kinks
Face to Face & "Dedicated Follower of Fashion," and "Dead End Street."

Who
A Quick One & "Substitute," "I'm a Boy," and "Happy Jack."

Clapton
Blues Breakers with Eric Clapton, Fresh Cream

Byrds
Fifth Dimension

Simon & Garfunkel
Sounds of Silence, Parsley, Sage, Rosemary and Thyme

Seeds
The Seeds, A Web of Sound

Yardbirds
The Yardbirds (Roger the Engineer) & "Shapes of Things/You're a Better Man Than I," "Over Under Sideways Down," and "Happenings Ten Years Time Ago."

Lovin Spoonful
Daydream, What's Up Tiger Lily, Hums of the Lovin Spoonful

Zappa
Freak Out!

Mamas & Papas
If You Can Believe Your Eyes and Ears...

Jefferson Airplane
Jefferson Airplane Takes Off

Buffalo Springfield
Buffalo Springfield

Monkees
Monkees & "I'm a Believer/I'm Not Your Steppin Stone"

Donovan
Sunshine Superman (US version) & "Mellow Yellow"

Otis Redding
The Soul Album,Dictionary of Soul

Animals
Animalisms & "Inside Looking Out," "Don't Bring Me Down" "See See Rider," "Help Me Girl," and "Hey Gyp."

13th Floor Elevators
The Psychedelic Sounds of the...

The Stones win this one easily for me but there are so many great records here. It's difficult to choose from the rest because they are so good, but I'm going for the ones I play the most and the Who's 'A Quick One' has always been a favourite.

Great year - I remember it well.

Beach Boys

Bob Dylan

Byrds

The letter 'B' always suited me well in all things musical.
On the whole, I'd rather be in Wallenpaupack.

Six would have been good. Three UK (Beatles, Stones, Who) and three US (Beach Boys, S&G, Lovin Spoonful), with a bonus personal favorite vote to The Byrds' 5D.

Those three singles are kind of the sweet spot for them: "19th Nervous Breakdown", "Paint it, Black", and "Have You Seen Your Mother, Baby, Standing in the Shadow?" Certainly they had others as well, but those just look so good together!

Beatles, Dylan, Beach Boys, Who, Kinks

I almost voted for the Stones but I've never been that fussed about Aftermath. Some truly wonderful singles though.

I love the Who in '66. Lots of colour and humour. Pop art with a capital "P".

I often think those singles were their peak.

The top five as listed are who I've picked.
Trust Matt to exclude The Small Faces though..I would have probably picked them too.

It was a great year for them, no doubt. But I'm not really sure I like Aftermath anymore than Face to Face. I guess the attendant 45s are the determining factor.

They're (almost) all magnificent.

It was the best year for the best group of them all
So I only need the one choice - Fabs all the way
There are loads of close runners up though
Complete Ramones Mp3 set on its way

"act" implies live music. So you should pick whoever made the best album AND played well live. I don't care though.

I went with Byrds, Beach Boys and Mothers, but the best act of this year is clearly Trane.
