*FRESH 'N' SEXY* wrote:They have no votes because CLOWN TROUSERS only gave us FIVE VOTES

and in a poll that features huge favourites such as the Beatles, Stones, Kinks, Who, Beach Boys and Dylan, what did you expect?

Didn't expect - this is canon conformity central - anyone other than those to be winning, but I kind of hoped there would be some kind of breakout in favour of the greatest of all mid-sixties vocal groups, especially as I accidentally gave their vote to the Mothers. I just thought a bit of spread around would be nice, that some among the grazers would, like me, see this as an opportunity to big up a slightly more egregious aspect of their taste, rather than chew the rancid canon cud one more time. I mean, this was the year I turned 18, peak engagement, and none of those acts are duds: the Airplane's debut wasn't all that, and probably deserves 0, but the Springfield's debut was pretty fucking ace, even sodding Donovan had a great year.
So, hope sprang, and crashed.

Most of these acts were better the year before or after. Honorable mention to the Spoonful, who don't make it up to this exalted level, but had by far their best and most active year.

I love this place. I'm reading your thread and can even buy the "Anything else is madness," line, and then you cherrypick the Lovin' Spoonful out of that group as honorable mention. They're all pretty much honorable mention depending on personal taste.

Of course you have Coan's views, which throws it all outta whack.

I will be, once we set up a separate prog section.

Oh, and another one for these ridiculous 'WHAT ARE YOU LISTENING TO RIGHT NOW?' threads.

He's been very angry these last few days.

I do hope he's ok. Maybe he's just run out of biscuits

For Ascension and Meditation? Yeah, I figured not enough BCBers knew those albums though. Just like Phil Ochs, The Association, Small Faces (though I probably should've included them), Everly Bros, Wilson Pickett, Hollies, etc.

For those two, yes. I don't blame you for leaving him out or anyone else since you only have a limited number of slots anyways but I would all the same say that both of those albums are superb and mark him handily as the best act of 1966 for me, arguably with Beach Boys following up.

The Velvet Underground should be in contention if only MGM had released the debut album on time (problems with the peelable banana cover delayed the release to March ‘67).

They're BCB canon straight down the middle.

Releasing Ascension and Meditations is definitely one hell of a good year. :D

A shame to see Matt's thread derailed by the usual suspects, but that's just to be BCB expected these days.

Perhaps a thread without the best of the best might have appeased the wrist wringers?

But even then, it seems Simon & Garfunkel would beat Love & 13th Floor Elevators. Poor old Coan .
