Would it have been any better or much different to the debut though?
The Space Oddity album was the real advancement - ambitious arrangements, more substance to the writing (which is generally a lot darker, probably due to his father's death and his half-brother Terry's deterioration). As much as I love some of the early stuff ( particularly the Pye singles) it feels like where the real Bowie begins. I'm not sure he was quite ready for that in 68.

I doubt that "Next" would have been on it, given that it had already appeared on Scott 2 (a UK #1 album).

I don't know if I can handle Bowie caterwauling through Next like he does with Amsterdam. He worshipped Scott didn't he, but never surpassed him really.

PS. I'm aware of the fact that they are both Brel songs, but Bowie was covering Scott, not Brel.

Oh, I like a lot of that transitional period between DB and SO (things like "London Bye Ta Ta"). I'd say if we've (since his death) been given a choice between several dozen unearthed concert recordings from the 1970s, this has as valid a place as any in the archaeological phase of his career.
