Neil Finn joins Fleetwood Mac!

Postby Purgatory Brite » 09 Apr 2018, 23:42

I thought this was fake news when I first saw it. However, Rolling Stone is reporting that Lindsey Buckingham has been sacked, to be replaced by Neil Finn and the guitarist Mike Campbell.

Wonders never cease in the wacky world of Rock 'n' Roll!

I'm shocked how many people on FB give a single shit about Lindsey Buckingham or him leaving Fleetwood Mac in this day and age. I'm sure he will be back, and even if he doesn't, they haven't done anything really good since 1979. And FM was best in the early years, it's finally become clear to me!

While basically agreeing with everything Quaco says, I am curious about this "firing" business. From the little bit of info in that article, it sounds to me like he was "fired" just like he was "fired" when he refused to tour behind Tango In The Night.

My wife being the Neil obsessive she is, I guess that means I have to now start forking out $48000 each for tickets to a fucking Lindsey Buckingham-less Fleetwood Mac!

Nice to see Mike Campbell getting work, though.

Weird. Will they play "Something So Strong" in concert now?
Where would rock 'n' roll be without feedback?

"History Never Repeats" might be more apt.

As a self-confessed Neil nut, I hoped upon hope that this wasn't true.
Sadly it is. I don;t see how he gains one single piece of anything good from the whole shabby experience.

I'm guessing that he's a long-time fan. So there's that.

I'm guessing, too, that he stands to make a a good bit of money (theoretically), and maybe even get his name known to a lot of people who otherwise might never have heard of him. So there's that.

While we're at it, I'm also guessing that he knows that this is probably a very temporary thing, so it's not going to put him off his creative endeavors for long, nor is it likely to seriously damage his credibility with most "Neil nuts".

Lindsey Buckingham just made an album with Christine McVie so I didn't even realise Fleetwood Mac were still going as a band, and without Buckingham continuing seems pointless anyway. Their last tour came seemed to be a final farewell kind of affair.

My one criticism of Neil has always been that he keeps this constant chopping and changing.... since Crowded House, we've had solo, then Finn Brothers, then back to Crowded House, then Pajama Club, then working with Paul Kelly, then solo, then working with Liam, then solo... inter-mixed with Johnny Marr at various stages. Sometimes it's a good thing but - I just get the feeling that it's almost dilettante-like. And, oddly, for a guy who I never thought was money-oriented, the big changes (like this FM thing) seem to come on the back of the biggest commercial disappointments. So, maybe, I have him wrong after all.

It doesn't detract from the greatness of the music but.... this Fleetwood Mac thing sounds kind of desperate - for all the reasons you mention Charlie. It appears, on the surface, to be rank money-grabbing. And that's not something I would previously have considered with Neil.

It feels grubby.

I expect he'd enjoy playing the songs for starters. And like so many performers the adulation is surely an addiction. And maybe he can write about falling into temptation with one of the band members.

I'm not sure it's totally money related but in saying that his last two tours were Australia with Liam doing outdoor concerts in zoos and shit (prohibitively expensive) and New Zealand with Liam doing town halls in unexpected places (which I'm honestly not sure about the price but I think it was pretty reasonable from what I read when I was in NZ).

It took me back as well to be honest, and I have the wife complaining my text that she has to start liking Fleetwood Mac now

Ultimately it is a pretty significant piece of news for anyone who is even vaguely a fan of Fleetwood Mac.
Quite funny listening to Christine McVie's desert island discs a couple of weeks ago you'd assume everything was pretty perfect and she was gearing up for the new tour with all her best friends after all her years in semi-retirement.

It's like when Kim Deal announced she was leaving Pixies. The world shrugs.

Wasted opportunity, it was a ripe moment to get Green back and return to their psych blues days. Neil Finn.. puh
