Rhetoric?
It takes a big man to cry, but it takes a bigger man to laugh at that man.

I mean, it’s promoted a seven page discussion so far.
It takes a big man to cry, but it takes a bigger man to laugh at that man.

HOT TAKE

Perhaps the thread isn’t aimed at the prognoscenti

I'd be looking at what filled those seven pages a long time before the word 'discussion' floated into consciousness.

I believe the notion of the "Big 6" groups was started by Prog magazine. This based on how many copies of the magazine are sold when these bands are featured on the cover. They have found if newer bands are included on the cover, the magazine sells less.

Ah, I just came up with it independently I guess! Just trying to think of who the most undeniably essential prog bands were. Alas, I was wrong (per Slider).

So they're generally considered eight.
By whom?
Do you have a source?

Yes
ELP
Genesis
Crimson
Van Der Graaf Generator

There are many bands who might lay claim to the 6th position.
Jethro Tull and PInk Floyd - both of whom might have been considered 'prog' for a very short period of their respective careers - among them. Likewise Rush, I guess.
But Caravan and Camel probably have the better credentials.
There are really only four unarguables though.
The first four mentioned above.

The Big six is a term used in many prog circles, I believe Purgatory Brite is right is that it came from prog magazine. There was a website called ghostland(gone now) that had a description and summary of all things and bands prog. Progachives.com is a good source for descriptions of prog and prog bands. The idea that Pink Floyd is not a prog band has been debated but I'm sorry just don't see the logic on them not being a prog band. It also started way before DSOTM. Atom Heart Mother is where PF took a turn to prog. We do get that Pink Floyd were more than just prog which makes people think they don't belong in the big six, but they were too big a force to not include them. Also don't think symphonic prog is the only prog there are many sub-genre including space rock which Pink Floyd are the kings of.

I do agree the sixth is debatable but
these five are not
Yes
ELP
Genesis
Crimson
Pink Floyd

Yes after that you can include several bands over several different sub prog genre. J. Tull(in the mid 70's they were a big prog band over the decades less so) Caravan, Soft Machine, VDGG, Magma, the big three italian prog bands, Camel, Rush, Gentle Giant etc could all be considered the tops of the prog realm.

oNe final note: Yes no band will ever call themselves Prog or just about any genre its not for the band to decide its the critics and fans. Yes we know what makes us experts? no idea.
