The second side of Heroes is a tour de force

Of course G. One of his finest moments. It is clearly too rich for the kind of person who thinks Tesco's cafe the height of sophistication.

It’s the first side of Heroes that doesn’t measure up - as compared to Low.

As regards the poll - definitely Ashes to Ashes. That one and Teenage Wildlife - which was too long for a single, I guess - rank alongside the best of his 70s work, even as they comment on it

FASHION - Only song I could get DJ's to play with Fripp and loved dancing to it. It's another brilliant mix of Bowie and Fripp. The bassline is also a great hook with funk.

When the album came out until the mid 90 my favorite was A2A but I've grown tired of it. Its still a great tune.
The other two are good too I find the second half of the album a bit subpar for Bowie but it has its moments too like Teenage Wildlife.

UTHB although A2A is probably the better song.

The vacuum created by the arrival of freedom
And the possibilities it seems to offer

That’s a pretty strong opener!

For this poll the answer is so clearly 'AtA'. Fabulous.

Whenever i think of the song now, i remember a quote Bowie did about recording the video. Lemme see if i can find it...

A key incident that shaped this philosophical turn took place as he was making the video for “Ashes to Ashes” in 1980 with director David Mallet. Bowie recounted the story to technician Michael Dignum during a break in filming for the “Miracle Goodnight” video from Blackstar:

“[I] had quite the attitude as a young pop star, it’s easy to get caught up in the hype. It changes you. So I was on the set [of] ‘Ashes to Ashes’… I’m dressed from head to toe in a clown suit…I hear playback and the music starts. So off I go, I start singing and walking, but as soon as I do this old geezer with an old dog walks right between me and the camera…knowing this is gonna take a while I walked past the old guy and sat next to camera in my full costume waiting for him to pass. As he is walking by camera, the director said, ‘Excuse me, [sir] do you know who this is?’ The old guy looks at me from bottom to top and looks back to the director and said, ‘Of course I do! It’s some cunt in a clown suit.’ That was a huge moment for me, it put me back in my place and made me realize, yes, I’m just a cunt in a clown suit. I think about that old guy all the time.”

One day they'll realise that wailing about rivers while twanging a koto isn't much cop really - even when Dame David does it.

Although I love Fashion, I voted Ashes to Ashes because of the sheer joy we all felt when it was first on TOTP. (Except Yomp. Assuming he watched TOTP. )

I always liked the song. It was the video with all those poseurs poncing about that I hated. I have no idea why Bowie ever thought artless shits like Steve Strange and Rusty Egan were worthy of his patronage. Maybe he was scared of them? Either way it took him 20 years to get over it.
