You are not missing anything as it's clearly not your bag. They are deeply uncool and some of their songs can be really annoying (e.g. Dreamer) but I do have a soft spot for them and I can play any of their albums of their successful run from Crime of the Century to Famous Last Words and find enough on each album to really enjoy. They made a lot of undeniably catchy tunes but could also stretch things out a bit and come up with some interesting arrangements and grooves and I love some of their long outros (Child of Vision, Don't Leave Me Now, Even in the Quiestest Moments).

I favour Hodgson's songs over Davies's on the whole and my own comp of favorites is roughly 2 thirds Hodgson. Once Hodgson left they were finished although they rather pointlessly continued.

I tend to favor Hodgson's songs too, but my favorite of theirs is Davies' "Downstream". Marvelous song.

Am I correct in thinking they have never done a big deal reunion cash grab tour? Just split up in the 70s for realsies and never looked back?

EDIT: No that was not anywhere close to correct, they have done many reunion tours, but not sure if they had all the members.

They’ve never managed to lure Roger Hodgson back for a reunion. They don’t even play his songs so most of the hits won’t feature in the set list

my understanding is that there is a very acrimonious situation with one of the two main guys.

me, I like 'em but I feel funny defending them. "crime of the century" and "quietest moments" are probably the only L.P's that I like (more or less) front to back but I like the other Ken Scott one too.

it's "headphone music". sure, it's mainly pretty easily digestible FM rock but I guess I don't mind that sort of thing. A lot of care went into those three records. In ken scott's book he describes some pretty far fetched and bizarre measures gone to achieve certain sounds. I'm not qualified to say if it was worth the effort or not but I love listening to that stuff. I guess I'm just a sucker for "well crafted" when I don't mind the songs.

"crime" and "moments" have some really beautiful moments on them. whoever replaced K.Scott on "moments" did a very nice job. "crisis" has a great cover and some pretty boss sounds but never grabbed me as much. the one that hit it big only has maybe one song I like and one I can stand.

Reading a bit ... it seems that there was never a rift between Hodgson and Davies, as many of us had thought, but that Hodgson just wanted to move to the Northern CA mountains and get away from the music business.

I quite like Crisis, it’s a notch below the albums either side but it’s still a pretty consistent album considering it was rushed out and consisted largely of left overs from the Crime sessions. Sister Moonshine, Another Man’s Woman and The Meaning all hit my Supertramp sweet spot.

Famous Last Words isn’t to the standard of the previous four but even that has some strong songs, especially the last three on the album which are up there with their best. There is some weak stuff on there too, and with It’s Raining Again they manage a song that rivals Dreamer for being annoying and cloyingly twee.

Hodgson’s first solo album is very good too. His others not so much.

I just read about that too. It seems they were never particularly close buddies anyway even when together but there doesn’t seem to be anything acrimonious between them.

Not finding a YouTube link, but one early one I really like is "And I Am Not Like Other Birds of Prey".

Carlsson, probably the thing YOU would like best about Supertramp is the fact that the guitarist on their first album is Richard Palmer-James later of King Crimson!

First one has some nice, almost Floydian things. I didn't find anything on the second one I liked. I think I got rid of it after a few years.

Jesus but that guy's voice is so fucking annoying though, the one that sang "Goodbye Stranger" and that stuff. Uch!

Don't know if I'm a fan as such, but a casual hits compilation of the obvious songs would do me fine. Say:

School
Bloody Well Right
Dreamer
Give a Little Bit
Gone Hollywood
The Logical Song
Goodbye Stranger
Breakfast in America
Take the Long Way Home
It's Raining Again

Don't take them seriously enough to need any of the deep cuts.
