canon vs teenage love, really, isn't it?

OK OK not for ALL of us - but a significant number

I like TwotM but it’s never really convinced me. I’ve always heard it as a song about friendship and it has associations in that respect for me – “I wandered out in the world for years, you just stayed in your room.” But the last verse descends into sub-Dylanesque ramblings and it takes a fuck of a long time to go away. And that bing-bong descending-the-scale bit… no thanks.

Whereas, Gurls rings true right from that first note on the bass right down to the bottom of its rock n roll heart every single time. It introduces itself and knows exactly how and when to leave, and in between it absolutely fucking soars. So, September Gurls for me.

According to the crit rock orthodoxy - "Big Star are good for you, they invented REM and no one listened to them at the time!".
As it goes "September Gurls" does win this one, being one of Big Star's breeziest, most charming efforts. But there are certainly Waterboys songs I'd take above it: some more obscure album tracks, others more famous ('Fisherman Blues'), just not TWotM.

The Whole of the Moon is the correct answer to most polls

I'll be honest - as much as i love 'SG', my heart says 'TWoTM' wins this one. The second half of it especially, as a song and a piece of songwriting, is pretty damn brilliant.

I spoke about wings, you just flew

It is crass , overblown and obvious. And as boring as hell. What is wrong with you people.

But that's enough about you, what about The Whole of the Moon?

I really do expect some sort of reward for sitting through the whole of that song.

And, yet - however deeply unappealing I may find it, there is no question that it/them resonates with a hell of a lot of people.

If you love it, may you never hear it through my ears.

That's enough about September Gurls, what did you think about The Whole of the Moon?

This discussion is clearly happening in the universe where David Cassidy’s version of “How Can I Be Sure” is better than the Rascals.

Not sure what people breathe in this universe. We’re in alien territory

I'm hearing TWotM for the first time right now.
It sounds VERY 1985 so far...that's a problem.
Dude's making the most of his limited vocal ability...
They must be building up to something.
Oh dear, there's a horn chart.
What's with that backing vocal? It's nothing to do with the rest of the song.
Oh, no, this isn't for me at all.
It's going to wrap up soon, right? Nope, there's still two minutes to go.
Suddenly there's a saxophone.
I like that there's no fade out.

In conclusion, and based on one listen vs. hundreds of listens...SG by the length of the sea.

Mike Scott's got a pretty strong voice actually, I wouldn't call it limited at all.
I can see both sides here though. There was a time I found it incredibly stirring and anthemic, then it just stopped working on me, I'd heard it too often probably. At that point it started to sound too thin and overdone. It's funny JC is so enthusiastic about it, when I remember he really slagged off 'December' when I posted it once, maybe that one's too subtle for him!

If we’re all supposed to be tired of the brown music - how long can we be tolerant of the European varietal with its fiddles and horns and accordions, Liam?

I say...down with the green music!
