I listened to the Big Star one again and thought, fuck, that's great!

And then I listened to Whole of the Moon and very quickly I started to get a wee lump in my throat and then I thought about the lass and I was almost on the verge of tears! It's a great record. I've always had a soft spot for it.

So Waterboys then

As much as I love 'September Gurls' (and it was the very first Big Star song I ever heard), I get the same visceral response to 'Whole of the Moon' as GB does. It's part of my DNA.
If you've got nothing to do, don't do it here.

In my world there’s Strawberry Fields/Penny Lane/Day Tripper/Paperback Writer and Good Vibrations. Then there’s September Gurls. Then there’s everything else. So, September Gurls for me, thanks.

The Waterboys are utterly shit.
Big Star are utterly brilliant.

End of.

I get that Big Star were a great band. I really do. There's such beauty in those melodies, they're essential in a way few bands match. I love them.

But if we're looking at these two songs - there's no competition as far as I'm concerned. 'September Gurls' is prime power-pop. It's sweet, it's pretty. But it doesn't take off.

That bit in 'The Whole Of The Moon' that starts at 2:15 - 'I spoke about wings', and the bass breaks out of its DUM DUM DUM to do this descending thing, and then the backing vocalist comes in - my God that's incredibly affecting. I don't get that kind of rush from many songs. By anyone.

I love Moon's keyboard riff that sounds like a wash of sound augmented by that lilting tune on the piano. And that it indeed gets a second wind halfway through and gets Mike Scott to another level in his vocal delivery- breathless stuff.
Up against another favorite, no less.

There is better songs from the album than moon. Gurls by a country mile.

Big Star sound fey and tinny at first but the class soon surfaces , don't bang the drum is the real gem from this period , better lyrics too.

It's funny, I had the same reaction in reverse, sort of.

Something about "September Gurls" makes me tear up. It's got this melancholy going underneath that's hard to put your finger on. (I guess that's what people always say about Big Star. Power pop plus an undefinable layer of sadness.)

It's underneath the overt emotional stuff about "crying all the time." It's like that stuff is deliberately flat and bland to cover up the real sadness.

As for "Whole of the Moon," it's nice and all, and I like the deliberate and exaggerated melodrama and sentimentality, with the wings, stretch for the stars, wind at your heels, unicorns and camembert, oceans full of tears, and all that stuff. It's like a mock-up of overdone teenage emotion that's so silly, it's honest.

But it doesn't really get me. I was too old by then maybe. Asked the wife, she's all for the Waterboys, but she's a little younger, and the first time she heard "September Gurls" was the Bangles cover.

Chalk me up on the "gets all swelled up inside when I hear The Whole Of The Moon" side

The Waterboys track is basically a really good song performed well by a really good band. I get why it connects with people.

September Gurls is like a commercial for the power of pop music itself. Everything great that a good pop song can achieve is in that track.

I like The Whole of the Moon - but it is boxing outside of its weight here.

I remember hearing Big Star back in 1991 on the back of Teenage Fanclub's rise and thinking that 1974 was, well, fucking years ago - like it was ancient.

27 years later...
