Yep, definitely, to both points. A great year for singles, especially, but not exclusively, in the UK, but nowt bar a load of gaseous emissions from the bloated corpse of mainstream rock (not that I didn't buy and enjoy one or two such LPs at the time ) – and here's an umpteenth vote for Shiny Beast.

No Parliament, Chic, O'Jays or Brothers Johnson?

To be fair though Ray, you pretty much think that about every fucking year. :)

I could do without a lot of those, save for Some Girls, Darkness, Kaya, This Year’s Model and a few others. Meanwhile - all of these are closer to my heart than much of that list:

Comes a Time - Neil Young
Excitable Boy - Warren Zevon
Stardust - Willie Nelson
Street Legal - Bob Dylan
The Rutles
Trurh n’ Time - Al Green
At Yankee Stadium - NRBQ
You’re Gonna Get It - Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers
If You Knew Suzi - Suzi Quatro
Blam! - The Brothers Johnson
Rose Royce 3
Legend - Poco
Bruised Orange -John Prine
Here My Dear - Marvin Gaye
Carlene Carter

Really? I think it's a bit sad, Davey, that you'd rather listen to a comic '60s send-up - albeit it a well done and entertaining one - rather than most of the '78 records that have been mentioned above. I know that's your thing 'n all, your listening tastes can be pretty black and white and you love what you love, but it just makes me feel a bit... sad.

Don’t be sad, Ange. It’s a good listen. Sometimes fun is fun!

:D Fair point, Ange, although I would limit it to before 1990.
But this year in particular produced a pile of poo in the album stakes and literally dozens of great singles in the UK as the independent labels geared up.

The fact that this article doesn't even have a disclaimer as to why they chose Dub Housing despite The Modern Dance also coming out in 1978 makes the list entirely suspect. I have met many people that prefer Dub Housing and don't begrudge them their opinion but it's still just silliness.

While I would not be able to argue that Stranger In Town is better than any other record on this list (except The Last Waltz.... ewww), I would still very happily listen to it if the need arises. But top 30? Probably not.

Of this list, for me:
1. This Year's Model
2. Q: Are We Not Men
3. Road to Ruin

Ghost of Harry Smith wrote:Dr Alimantado - Best Dressed Chicken in Town.
The Rezillos - Can’t Stand The Rezillos.
AC/DC - Powerage (their best LP).
Brian Eno - Before and After Science.
Tapper Zukie - Man Ah Warrior.
Marvin Gaye - Here, My Dear.

Eno - Before... Dec 1977! Or?

From this list:

Darkness On The Edge Of Town.
The Man Machine.
This Years Model.
All Mod Cons.
Outlandos d’Amour.

I really like Davey’s choice of Dylan’s Street Legal, and keeping my prog flag flying, Genesis: And Then There Were Three.

No argument here about the quality of the singles produced in '78. :)

Kate Bush's fantastic debut is another glaring omission.
