Good Live Joy Division?

Postby Tactful Cactus » 05 Mar 2018, 17:10

I watched the 2006 documentary again and its remarkable how absolutely kick-arse they sounded live compared to their dry and tinny studio selves (I know its mostly Hannett to blame/be thanked for there)

There's a few live snippets on that doc but the audio was always very patchy. Is there any good document of their live show?

There’s a lot of live material on the boxed set, and there’s the posthumous album, Still. The Peel Sessions may be live in the studio, but they’re more lively than the Factory records.

The Les Bains Douche concert is great (it’s on official CD release) - the sound is really crisp and in your face.
I've been talking about writing a book - 25 years of TEFL - for a few years now. I've got it in me.

Got a FLAC- file of their University Of London-gig from 8/2/80 which is very good indeed.

Les Baines Douches is the one to go for, but avoid the official Preston gig release. It's a record of a night when their equipment was malfunctioning, so God knows why that got a release.

Another vote for Les Bains Douches. I'd say it's "good bootleg" quality, sound-wise, but the band is on fire.

Amsterdam Paradiso is excellent, i think the best live document and good sound quality.

Thanks everyone, I spun Les Bains Douches last night. It does indeed sound exactly what I was looking for

Les Bains Douches is great but my favourite live recording is the one at The Factory in July 1979. They play most of Unknown Pleasures & introduce Atrocity Exhibition. The energy is exhilarating and Ian seems quite talkative and lively between songs. It's on the Heart and Soul boxset, and I think the re-released UP CD.

A hefty vote for the Peel Sessions
