Like fast-moving clouds casting shadows against a hillside, the melody-loop shuddered with a sense of the sublime, the awful unknowable majesty of the world.

Incroyable.
It takes a big man to cry, but it takes a bigger man to laugh at that man.

There's always this sort of toilet-y smell with The Damned. Bad music.

The first album is probably the purest punk album, in reality. They never got close to it again, but that 30 minutes is still incendiary and, in New Rose, they really did nail one of the truly magnificent punk classics.

You don't like "New Rose"? That's as good a track as The Damned ever released.
It is, and it's still cack.
and you are no better than DD.
A jaded old heavy metal hack.
For shame.

Re: Top five punk bands
and I know this sounds elitist and metropolitan, but you really had to be there to know what was really going on. By the time the sex pistols released a record it was about as relevant as Abba. On the ground it was all about the Damned, the Clash ( initially) and the Banshees. Most of the bands in the clubs were pale imitations of the real thing by spring 77. By the middle of 1977 It was all but finished. I officially declared it dead on the day the Clash released Complete control.
Cunts.
Cunts.

You never got any kind of sense of what they were about, The Damned. Dull London brickies and plumbers stumbling about in rock music 'cos they couldn't do anything else - and they couldn't even do that well. Same sort of thing with The Who. Yelling and farting around. Just rubbish.

Good heavens, why?
I was 3 years old, living with highbrow hippies in San Antonio in 1977. I know nothing of the subject, so I’m not averse to giving the Pistols their due.

Re: Top five punk bands
I like The Damned and I think early Damned could bring a chaotic sense of fun to the party, but they were less exciting than their peers because they didn't have so much of the shock of the new. They were closer than the other bands to a more traditional pre-punk mainstream rock (which is why Yomp liked them so much of course) with Sensible straining at the leash to do another guitar solo and Scabies wanting to do his Moon impression.
