Roxy Music's Worst Song.....

Postby Jimbly » 19 Feb 2018, 16:12

The new issue of Mojo has a feature on Roxy Music tjis month. Mostly focusing on the first album. A sidebar has a potted review of each album. In the Manifesto paragraph it claims that Trash is the worst Roxy song ever.

So is it the worst? I've always loved it, both versions.

I love the 'New Wave' version - they did MUCH worse.

'Strictly Confidential' is probably the worst I can think of right now. There are probably worse songs on Manifesto

I like it as well. There are lesser tracks like some of the also rans on the hallowed first two or, indeed, the second side of Manifesto. The striking thing is, however, that there’s so little in the way of out and out duds. The hit rate is remarkably strong over 9 LPs.

Exactly. I've been racking my brains trying to think of an absolute stinker, drew a blank. The second sides of Manifesto and Flesh and Blood aren't great but aren't guff either.

I'd go for 'The Bob', just ugly shit really. At the other end of the scale is 'More Than This', which I know a number on here love, but is for me far too sweet and airbrushed. I suppose the latter is a decent song though, for all my misgivings, so I'll nominate 'The Bob'.

'Trash' is great btw, one of my favourite latter Roxy tunes.

I usually like their covers, but I do think their "Midnight Hour" is a bit overly stylized. He usually does stuff with a wink - for that one it feels like the wink is missing.

I'm not a big fan of Flesh and Blood all told, although I seem to like it a little more every time I listen. I'll have to listen again and see if anything else strikes me as unredeemable. MH isn't that bad, but it's the worst thing I can think of offhand.

The Bob is the one I’d thought of, as well as agreeing with Strictly Confidential. There’s a few substandard songs but the point remains - it’s a remarkably strong body of work.

Nb I love More Than This.

I can't really defend 'The Bob' either - altho' there are a couple of sections I like quite a lot (when it calms down and the piano and clarinet dominate for a short time).

I seem to remember a couple of instrumentals on Avalon that were pretty pointless.

It's a real grower and the singles are fantastic. I prefer it to Manifesto but it's not quite Avalon standard.

I'd probably take something off Manifesto. Nothing is terrible but there's some pretty forgettable stuff like Ain't It So or My Little Girl.

Oh, and I just listened to Manifesto, and "Trash" is one of the better songs on it!

Had forgotten about their "Eight Miles High," which is also not very good, but it's so completely unlike the original that I think I can almost appreciate how anachronistic it is (which, knowing Ferry, is probably intentional).

I think I'm sticking with "Midnight Hour" as being their worst.

I love Trash.

In Every Dreamhome a Heartache is their worst song.
Well, it isn't, but it's by far their most overrated.

No it is not.
Dreamhome is their paranoiac masterpiece. Love it to bits.

Trash is not horrible either. I think the one I enjoy the least is The Main Thing.

Trash is fine, they did much much worse.
Eight Miles High and In the Midnight Hour are vapid and hollow. Much of Manifesto is lackluster and mediocre (My Little Girl/Cry Cry Cry/Spin Me Round for starters).
The first two albums are flawless of course.

"The Bob" is certainly an acquired taste, part of what makes that album such an incredible debut. It took me some years to get what they were putting down.
