It takes a big man to cry, but it takes a bigger man to laugh at that man.

A lot of people really love it. I never did and still don't. There's something too obvious and repetitive about it. You want reflective and fragile Jam era Weller then go for 'Liza Radley'.

We saw Paul Weller do this live last night as part of the acoustic part of his set.

It was outstanding, but then again, I always loved the song.

It does nothing for me.
Nonsense to the aggressiveness, I've seen more aggression on the my little pony message board......I mean I was told.

"For no bonds can ever tempt me from she"

Who talks like that?

It's clunky and melodically dull.

The lover, sighing like a furnace, with a woeful ballad made to his mistress' eyebrow.

You’d love it if he’d sung it with a German accent!

Your twisted cynicism makes me feel sick
Your open disgust for 'idealistic naive'
You've given up hope you're jaded and ill
The trouble is your thoughts a catching disease
Ooh - you need to get away
Ooh - you need a change of pace
Because you're all dried up and you don't believe
You reckon I'm dreaming when I say I still feel real
You say you work for yourself and its the only way
But I look at you talking and to me you just scrape away
What makes once young minds get in this state,
Is it age or just the social climate
You're talking like some fucking hardened MP
You're saying power's all!
And it's power you need!
Ooh - you need to get away
Ooh - you need a change of place
Because you've given up on hope
You're emotionless
You've no need for love it's just hate, hate, hate.
But I look at you shaking and it is you
Who is scraping away
You who is scraping away.
It takes a big man to cry, but it takes a bigger man to laugh at that man.

I guess I mean, it seems like perfectly good music to these ears. Maybe it's just his accent that's a bit annoying on this one. Not as good as "Tonight at Noon", which is similarly poetic.

It’s never been one of my favourite Jam songs, but I like it fine. It’s lacy and flimsy and charming. And the foghorns! At the start he’s sailing out from Blighty, off to do his bit for Empire or perhaps a spot of piracy in the Spanish Main, and then at the end the white cliffs are looming into view through the fog and he’s anticipating the simple pleasures of homecoming – a quick shag, scampi and chips and a change of clothes. Yes, it gets my vote.
