It Is With Great Regret That I Have To Admit......

Postby Dr Markus » 13 Feb 2018, 11:57

What song/s or album do you like by bands/singers that you absolutely hate with a passion.

I really like how soon is now by the smiths. :(

I like 1979 by Smashing Pumpkins.

There are a few decent moments on Gish too.

Those aside though, a fucking horrible band.

He probably doesn’t understand soul like you do tho’ Hodgson.

Are you going to duff him up?

Don't you mean "it is what great regret I have to admit..."?

Shouldn't it be 'I greatly admit when I regret'. He needs an adverb in there.

You know, "chagrin" might work a little better than regret, don't you think?

Anyway, to answer your post, the first UB40 record is the only thing I can come up with right now.
It's from before they discovered The Regg-o-matic (the machine they used to produce all those cover songs)
Let U be the set of all united sets, K be the set of the kids and D be the set of things divided.
Then it follows that ∀ k ∈ K: K ∈ U ⇒ k ∉ D

All these things.. by The Killers is great - dumb lyric notwithstanding - but I don’t like anything else they’ve done.

Likewise Wide Open Space by Mansun.

I can’t say I hate either of those bands mind you.

I'm more inclined towards hatred of Blur perhaps but I do like the song Tracy-Jacks.
I've been talking about writing a book - 25 years of TEFL - for a few years now. I've got it in me.

Could never stand Guns 'n Roses, but You Could Be Mine is something I really like. And the video for November Rain is utterly hilarious, particularly Slash's 'unplugged on a hilltop' guitar solo....

I often contend, among friends after a quantity of alcohol has been consumed, that, up to a certain point - say, the mid 90s, any relatively successful act, no matter how generally egregious, has at least one banger to their name. I’m often then clobbered with all manner of beyond the pale dreck that I can sort of make a case for. Perhaps excluding MOR atrocities like Celine Dion. Or Metallica.

I’m also far too jaded to actually rouse enough passion to hate a mediocre/poor rock band. Previous bete noires like Pink Floyd, Van Morrison, Rod Stewart and Belle & Sebastian, who are still generally worthy of derision but who are now all RT approved (with obvious caveats e.g. Syd era only; pre-Atlantic Crossing, etc).

It was an article of faith for me and my muso mates that even the shittiest local band had at least the beginnings of one good tune.

Performers of other people's material may be a different story but even gloopy schlock.merchants occasionally happen on a decent tune.
Goodness gracious me.
