Marr probably beat Page in an NME poll.

You come at the Queen, you best not miss.

Re: Led Zeppelin vs The Smiths
ha only here would LZ be losing. awesome!
I'll break it down this way
drummer and bass player - LZ
lyrics - The Smiths
interesting guitar - Marr
sloppy soloist - LZ
cooler look - TS
band that plays more together - TS
band that would prefer to all be doing solos- LZ
band that will never get back together - tie neither
believe in hobbits and dragons- LZ
excessive noise - LZ
too much moaning - LZ
Too much complaining about red meat - TS
cooler hair - TS

Not in a Melody Maker poll

Or an NME one. Zep were laughed at.
It takes a big man to cry, but it takes a bigger man to laugh at that man.

The Smiths would faint if they had to play together for an extended song. There were none better than Zeppelin. They turned hard rock into jazz, that way.

They won almost every Melody Maker award in '79, the year In Through the Out Door came out. Melody Maker was more staid, I grant you.

Melody Maker was for squares until the mid 80s.

Re: Led Zeppelin vs The Smiths
Had I grown up in the UK in the 80s, it would obviously be The Smiths. That’s not how it happened, though. So it’s LZ.

I voted for LZ myself but it was close. I’m pleased to see The Smiths winning, nonetheless.

Music for spotty teens, you grow out of ‘em eventually.

I don't listen to Zep these days. I still occasionally listen to the Smiths.
In my late teens they meant the world to me.

hard rock into jazz.
what I meant is they were always looking to solo and did so all the time.

I don't know if that's entirely true. Listen to something like In My Time of Dying, which has a few different instrumental movements, or lots of Presence, which does the same, where they play together as a band, and not necessarily soloing.
But I'm sure you have a different definition of "movement" when it comes to Zeppelin.

In my mid-teens Zep meant the world to me. A couple of years later it was The Smiths.
These days I still enjoy them both, but I'm far more likely to reach for Led Zep II or IV than anything The Smiths did.
Part of it may be living in Manchester. You get kind of sick of having its musical history rammed down your throat. I hardly ever listen to 'Manchester bands ™' nowadays*
* The Fall are the honourable exception, and Joy Division (who strictly speaking were from Salford and Macclesfield anyway).
