The name probably won't mean anything to anybody but Rayge and Muskrat, but I was reminded yesterday that the label on The Standells' classic garage punk 45 "Dirty Water" says "Arranged by Lincoln Mayorga".

The connection is Ed Cobb; Mayorga had been the Four Preps’ pianist and musical director ( and a Hollywood High classmate).

He also played piano on Cobb’s production, Ketty Lester’s Love Letters (also Tainted Love, for that matter).

Also the Piltdown Men and the deceptively named Link-Eddy Combo.

Mayorga went on to work behind the scenes with a Disney for years, and later became a “pops” orchestra conductor.

And that’s without reading the Wikipedia entry!

You never disappoint, Muskrat.

I knew most of that, including that Mayorga played on "Love Letters" - but I never knew Cobb produced that! Great record.

Going by comments made by the Standells about the "Dirty Water" session (as quoted on THEIR Wiki page), I wonder if Mayorga was even really there, or if he just had some kind of deal with Cobb at the time where he got credit on stuff Cobb did. Even before reading the Standells' comments I wondered how much LM could have really done on that record, beyond maybe suggesting the drum groove or the harmonica break or something.
