Waifcore, Quiet Grrrl or Manic Pixie Dreampop
Three genre names I invented to described that loosely affiliated group of 90's (and beyond?) alternative rock female rock singers/female-fronted bands, singing wistful songs, not loud or droney enough to be counted among shoegazers, too mainstream sounding to be part of the twee movement. Did you like any of these artists? Who else belongs on this list?

I'm a bit of a fan of Edie, at least I like the first 2 albums. I don't really know any of the others.

These genre names make me think more about the post-punk indie stuff that was big in the early 90s. Throwing Muses, Lois, Mecca Normal, Velocity Girl, Scrawl, Kinnie Starr. Not really aggressive punk rock music, but very personal, and with the homemade feel & aesthetic of punk.

I liked Scrawl a lot. Here's a mellow pretty one.
And here's a more rocking one.

Velocity Girl was fabulous. I didn't really go much for the artists I previously mentioned, other than Juliana Hatfield to some extent.

Liked Juliana, but the Sundays were a cut above any of the others really. I still pull their three LPs out of the rack now and again.

Ditto.
I think Veruca Salt should've been included in this.

Veruca Salt seemed to me like they were trying hard to be The Breeders.

I've spent more time wondering what it is about "Seether" that people like than is probably healthy for me.

Tsunami is another name that comes to mind here.
I wasn't a big fan of their music but I still felt like they really did cultivate a specific vibe, that was questioning of a lot of the punk rock cliches I enjoyed at the time.
And I appreciated Jenny Toomey stepping up at the beginning of the digital revolution to stand up for artists' rights to be compensated for recordings, and to try to forge a solution. She didn't win the war for us all, but she was one the few people that tried to do ANYTHING.

The Cardigans certainly fit the bill here.

Ugh. To the lot of it.
Like fast-moving clouds casting shadows against a hillside, the melody-loop shuddered with a sense of the sublime, the awful unknowable majesty of the world.

They do. I'd rank them with the Sundays.

Oh yes. I lurrrrvvvvee Nina Persson when she's whispering in my ears. The whole Long Gone Before Midnight album slays me much more than the poppy Lovefool ditty posted earlier

To quote Mad magazine, yecch! Say what you want about Courtney Love, but at least she sounded like she had a pulse.
