Sonically, this is a massive disappointment.

Can't make out the one in the top left hand corner.

Please state why BF as I was considering buying that even though I've already got three vinyl copies of Piper - must be mad or simply afflicted with obsession.

i waited a good long time for it (for years, I bid on originals on eBay...until they invariably reach a certain prohibitive price point), and while I confess that my second playback wasn't as crushingly disappointing as the first (I really cranked the volume the second time around and played it on a more flattering system), there is an overall digital coldness that taints the sound in places. There's a certain "presence" or "life" that one can expect from a mono era LP (a 60s Monkees or Hendrix disc, perhaps...even the 2014 Beatles mono remasters) that mostly evades me here - this has an odd faint digital ring, and periodically sounds just a bit "hollow" or "flat". The 2007 compact disc sounds more pleasing, ultimately. If you have an especially nice sounding system, and if this is as good as we're going to get for under $500, it's probably worth owning, but...a lot of this depends on what one wants out of wax - the sound of a nice analogue master is a beautiful thing, and this particular reissue seems like something of a missed opportunity.

Okay, many thanks for that, now I'll have to think about it. Got the mono CD that came out with the 3CD red book some time ago and at least a couple of other CDs of it plus the three vinyls, do I need another? Suppose if it came down in price a bit I might just be tempted. Crazy isn't it?

I shudder to think how many times over the years I have bought this particular title (and so many others). It's a record well worthy of that obsessiveness.

I don't know about the CDs (did they release this on disc?), but this is four LP sides taken from "three 12" acetates, with typed labels."
