Willie Nelson Sings Nirvana
He’s obviously just fucking around with it the way musicians do, but people are having eargasms over it on social media.
It’s strange how covering this particular song is still a signifier of something all of these years after the original version. I think it sounds like a pretty weak vehicle when a guy like Willie gets behind the wheel. But nobody here agrees with me on shit like this.
You eat this up. Right?

Without the buildup I might have missed what song it was. That voice and that plunkety guitar win me over. They usually do.

Re: Willie Nelson Sings Nirvana
This was done on local radio station Triple M as a part of a (frankly wonderful) segment called Andrew Denton's Musical Challenge, where he/they would get guest musicians to cover a song almost the opposite of their usual gear. Willie had never even heard the original before this!

Have you heard Willie Nelson doing Teen Spirit?
Oh yeah, he totally REIMAGINES IT
Yeah, I think he really captures Cobains HAUNTING VISION
It’s just Nelson arsing about. A large part of the records appeal is down to the arrangement and performance. Take that away and you lose the magic.

It certainly lacks the gravitas of To All The Girls I’ve Loved Before.
It takes a big man to cry, but it takes a bigger man to laugh at that man.

It sounds like a Jandek demo.
Like fast-moving clouds casting shadows against a hillside, the melody-loop shuddered with a sense of the sublime, the awful unknowable majesty of the world.

It's just the chorus with curlicues. A song about being a teenager fumbled over by an even older stoner than me. Rubbish.

It’s was always a mediocre song but the sound/performance raised it.

The idea interests me slightly less than Willie Nelson making a reggae record in the 21st Century. Which doesn’t interest me.

Re: Willie Nelson Sings Nirvana
I've never had much interest in Willie Nelson but when I was working with American trainee teachers in Prague a few years ago we had a session on 'Using Music In The Classroom' at the end of the course, where we played them all kinds of stuff - and the one they used to go fucking NUTS for was 'On The Road Again' (or whatever the fuck corny old title it had). I mean, they'd be beaming from ear to ear, grabbing each other enthusiastically, singing along - half of them knew all the words, and they were from all over the US. It was quite a sight. After the first few times I had to leave the room.

I feel the same when Scots start singing the Proclaimers
