Can vs. Hawkwind
Love them both, even if both are a bit overrated or too often namechecked these days. Makes sense since they were underrated or forgotten about for the years they were around and just after. It takes time.
What do you think about them? Which do you prefer?

Re: Can vs. Hawkwind
I like both but agree they are both a tad overrated.
If I had to choose it's a actually a pretty easy decision as I play my favourite Hawkwind albums (X In Search of Space, Doremi, Hall of the Mountain Grill, Warrior on the Edge of Time, 25 Years On, Levitation) a lot more than my favourite Can albums (Tago Mago, Ege Bamyasi and Future Days). Both bands are capable of greatness but both can turn out some tedious sludge, often on the same album.

Re: Can vs. Hawkwind
I came late to Hawkwind, largely based on comments on BCB.
Tough choice, but as TCE says both great and both flawed.
Haven’t heard all of either groups recordings,by a long stretch, but dare I say Hawkwind win by a nose simply because they’re a bit more fun?

CAN overrated!?
I voted CAN, they are in my top ten list of bands/artists
and Hawkwind is not,
only really like the Calvert years (1976–1978: Charisma era)

Are Hawkwind overrated? I can't think of a band with less kudos, admitting to liking Hawkwind is like admitting a crush on Nigel Farage.
I probably prefer them though. I only really like the Mooney years of Can.

I’ve never really liked Can, but always loved Hawkwind.
Easy choice for me.

Re: Can vs. Hawkwind
I can't say whether they're overrated, but it seems to me they're both always being mentioned by people as influences, getting 180-gram reissues, and so on. They're more hip now than they ever used to be.

Re: Can vs. Hawkwind
I’ve never understood the fuss about Hawkwing although I admit I haven’t dug deep.
Can made some great music but their albums are often patchy. They did have a singular magic at their best though

Re: Can vs. Hawkwind
Can are genius. The band were composed of some of the most talented musicians of their time and they weren't afraid to go 'out there'. For their first four or five years they put out some incredible music that still matches the peaks of the very finest non-mainstream bands.
Hawkwind did some great stuff (Space Ritual is an amazing live document), they made a wonderful and unique noise, but they're just not as good as Can.

Re: Can vs. Hawkwind
I feel I ought to say Can.
They are a bit more varied and colourful.
And I listen to them more often.
But I kind of prefer Hawkwind for some illogical reason.

Re: Can vs. Hawkwind
I do Hawkwind up to Lemmy leaving, I inherited all the original LP's when a fanatic I knew buggered off to the accumulator.
One of those cases where the sleeve art made me investigate the music.
This is my goto album
I have never gotten on with Can, it just sounds like noodly shit to me, I came to them through the mini LP Czuckay did with the Edge,
but the attraction has always eluded me, whats the killer LP(s) ?

I've never really understood what's meant to be so great about Can. Hawkwind are much more interesting but I do prefer the Robert Calvert years.

Yeah, but you see pictures of Can from their golden age and the way they look epitomises 'hippy'

Re: Can vs. Hawkwind
I've never entirely got what is supposed to be so great about 'Tago Mago.' Some Can I like fine, but overall Hawkwind is much more my kind of thing.
Where would rock 'n' roll be without feedback?
