1st single off the 2nd album FACE OFF!

Postby fange » 07 Jan 2018, 11:49

Jefferson Airplane - 'Somebody To Love'

Spirit - 'I Got A Line On You'

The Doors - 'People Are Strange'

Rank them ... if you can!

And you can only choose 2 in the poll!

JA
Doors
Spirit

all great, of course

and the Great Society's original of 'Somebody to Love' might be even better than this one

They're in the right order already.

Where was “Strange Days” released as a single?

That’s okay, it wouldn’t get my vote anyway.

I’m going with the Airplane but the Spirit is ace too.

“People Are Strange” is a great song and a brilliant choice for a single, but it’s still “STL”.

I first encountered both on the box set above circa 1990. An absolutely critical gateway for me, the equivalent I guess of others eureka moments when discovering Nuggets or whatever - check out the tracklisting:

Anyway, probably happy with the order they come in but all 9 or 10/10 for me.

I'm not a massive fan of any of these acts- although I like other stuff by them- but I agree that all three tracks here are stellar. I really can't choose between them, whether it's the strident, defiant "Somebody to Love" (Grace Slick was a formidable vocalist: on this track her forcefulness fits the music and intent of the song), the surprisingly malevolent "People Are Strange" (probably my favourite Jim Morrison lyric because it's somewhat understated and the tune's sharpness fills in the gaps). But after some thought, I'll give it to "I've Got A Line On You", because there's such a fiery rush to the song, it's all pentup energy. I like the accompanying album and Twelve Dreams of Dr Sardonicus , but nothing the band did matches it for sheer direct attack and power (although I concede they could go to different places satisfactorily, the playing on those albums can't be faulted).

Nice matchup, fange!
It's before my time but I've been told, he never came back from Karangahape Road.

I love that Spirit-track!
The other two are ex-aequo as far as I'm concerned.

Yip.
Nonsense to the aggressiveness, I've seen more aggression on the my little pony message board......I mean I was told.
