Re: Pick 3 from 5: SAINT ETIENNE
I've always struggled a bit with this band. I kind of want to like them, as they're smart and catchy and have interesting arrangements and influences, but there's something that I can't really get around with them. I think it's just the combination of Cracknell's vocals and the production: it's a place in the middle of smooth, sophisticated and sweet that gets a bit too cloying and, I don't know, makes me think of trendy wine bars.
I always liked the Neil cover and I can enjoy the rest of these (why no 'Hobart Paving'? That's surely their greatest moment?) but I'm just not quite there with them.

Great: Avenue, Nothing Can Stop Us
Very good: Only Love Can Break Your Heart
Okay: Let's Kiss and Make Up, You're in a Bad Way
My favourite tracks of theirs tend to be the album tracks, singles can sometimes bring out a slightly tacky side in them. However 'Avenue' is certainly one of the greatest thing they did, a track where Stanley and the gang indulged all their visions of an epic, melancholy orch-pop and pulled it off with total panache.
Wolfie I await your presence on my Quo thread!

Kiss And Make Up is out of its depth. 1, 3 & 4 with Avenue as the jewel. As a fan, however, I get slightly annoyed that all people want to talk about is the first two records. They’ve got much more to them.

All of these are amazingly great, but "Nothing Can Stop Us" is the amazingly greatest of them all.
Where would rock 'n' roll be without feedback?

Yeah I agree. Some of the later albums have gone under the radar.

Why say that?
I'm not a big fan, I generally agree with what Ed said. But now and again they made something that was a bit better than just a pleasant noise.
