"I'm the only fan of __________on this board."

Postby pcqgod » 12 Dec 2017, 19:43

Here's a challenge for youse: Fill in the blank with something or someone music related for which you believe you are the only fan here. It can be an obscure or generally-derided artist, an album, a song, musical instrument or effect....heck, even an entire musical genre.
Where would rock 'n' roll be without feedback?

Okay, I'll give it a go, although an occasional poster has mentioned her favourably fairly recently.

Used to be the only fan of Sammy Walker but I think I've converted The Fish a while ago.

Otherwise, Graham Parker.

Robert Hall, Valentino/Major, and other sound effects record libraries, with the possible exception of Elektra, because people tend to know that one.

I've been thinking about this, and apart from people from the 1930s or 1940s like Mildred Bailey, Jo Stafford, the Ravens or the Four I can't come up with anyone I know someone else on the board at least tolerates. Copehead likes the Libertines, otherwise I'd try Babtyshambles. All the weird noises stuff I like from the ninties and later I was introduced to by Driftin and Fish on the Refuge
How about King Missile Mark III, Selfish Cunt, When People Were Shorter And Lived Near the Water?

I like a fair amount of American guitar/grad school indie rock bands from the early 90s that don’t get any love here. Bedhead and Unwound have gotten some love due in part to nice reissue series from Numero, but that’s the extent of it. I’ve been thinking about starting a series of threads, but have so little time to write anything beyond responses to outrageous shit and political crap.

I like some Unwound stuff actually. I remember you and Marios talking about them years ago and I checked them out and wasn't convinced, but then I tried again when those reissues came out and got some press, and there are some good things there.

I like Steve Vai, but mainly as a sideman to Zappa or DL Roth.

If BCB doesn't talk about Jo Stafford, then that illustrates just how limited we are as a music forum. She's not obscure at all but well-known and a unique stylist. I regularly check her renditions of a standard to measure other performers' interpretations. You don't really understand Bill Evans unless you know the renditions that Evans was listening to. When Charlie Haden did some of his quartet albums in the 1990s, he was thinking about Stafford's performances.

Maybe the last great song that Jerome Kern wrote.

As far as the Ravens, I only know a track that was included on a Smithsonian collection of music from the 1950s, but it is one of the great doo-wop tracks of all time.
