Bowie loses his cool

Postby The Modernist » 30 Nov 2017, 19:14

Bowie talks about punk, then mentions a band (around 0.44)...not who I expected him to mention!

I didn't see the part where the interviewer asks Bowie to compare himself to Randy Newman.

When does that come up?

Well, music isn't a very important part of his life, so there you go.

Good for him. It's quite possible that he was so good because he didn't bother to listen to other people's music too much.

It's everyfuckingwhere these days. I'm sick of it.

Luckily Dire Straits didn’t limit themselves by categorizing themselves as punk.

Sounds like Ricky Gervais.
It takes a big man to cry, but it takes a bigger man to laugh at that man.

He does a bit! that slightly high-pitched, slightly London thing.

I think he erupts into the same cackle now and again, too. Beginning of 'Andy Warhol'...

You don't have to go that far west before people start talking with a countrified burr, they do in places like Ayelsbury and Reading.

This is 1978 so Dire Straits were a long way from Brothers in Arms but even so they were never anywhere close to be described as new wave. He'd probably just heard one song by them and liked it, or was taking the piss as Fange said.

So...how exactly does labeling one’s music as “punk” limit you any more than labeling yourself “new wave”?
The opinions of this poster are subjective. That’s how opinions work.

Yeah, that's what I thought too.

I suppose the label 'New Wave' covers more than 'punk', but that really wasn't what he was saying.
