Probably due to the combination of parenting a 2 year old and work filling in the rest of what used to be “free time”, nearly all my purchases this year are from the tried and trusted. Perhaps that’s also part of hitting the latter stages of my 40s as well. Within that, there’s been some unlikely successes and a couple of ignominious failures.

Albums which have given me pleasure, then:

Courtney Barnett & Kurt Vile, Ride, Saint Etienne, Danielle Luppi & Parquet Courts, Fever Ray, Phoenix, Ryan Adams, QOTSA, Sleaford Mods, Charlotte Gainsbourg, War On Drugs, Loyle Carner, Thundercat, Father John Misty, Bedouine, Michael Head, Sparks.

On the downside, Beck’s Colors has some belting singles but the overall LP is so overproduced to end up fairly indigestible. The Gorillaz LP is an absolute turkey, as was Soulwax’s return, and I’m very much on the fence with the usually reliable LCD Soundsystem, Aimee Mann, Public Service Broadcasting, Kendrick Lamar and others.

I haven't heard all of the Beck and the Barnett/Vile records but I like what I've heard.

I am absolutely appalled and angered by the acclaim that charlatan James Murphy has garnered for his silly wank of an album.

The Fall and Sparks both put out very good LPs in 2017.

Listening to the Plant now. It's OK. It's kind of what's become his shtick. He doesn't exactly sound terribly committed.

The Peter Perrett and Father John Misty records are great. Beyond that, can't think of anything I'm really terribly sold on.

I normally defend new music and spend a decent amount of time creating spotify playlists with what I've enjoyed every year...but this year I really am grasping for straws - although I felt similarly about 2016 until the very end of the year when there was some good records that came out and I discovered some that I'd missed. the best ones I've found so far are Marika Hackman, And So I Watch You From Afar, Alvvays, Girl Ray and Big Thief which I've really enjoyed, but my 2017 playlist is woefully thin on the ground so far.

I've been waiting all year for Anna Calvi, who announced at the end of last year that she'd be releasing something new but I've heard nada from her camp since the David Bowie tribute, god knows what's going on.

I'm really struggling otherwise besides Shelby Lynne & Allison Morrer's "Not Dark Yet" which is my absolute favourite so far (as I can recall).

I really like thatone, but that's about it for me too. There have been a few others that I've liked to varying degrees - Ryan Adams, Julian Cope, Wolves in the Throne Room, War On Drugs, The Fall, Living Colour. There must be others I can't recall now. But very little that's really thrilled me, in terms of new music.

I've heard plenty of great old stuff that's new to me though.
