Al Green book by Jimmy McDonough

Postby Tactful Cactus » 18 Nov 2017, 13:11

McDonough seems to do about a book a decade. I could not put down Shakey when it came out in 2003. Skipped the Tammy Wynette one, but its time to invest again.

I've probably read and re-read Shakey a dozen or more times.

This seems promising.

Agree.

I bet Tammy's had a hell of a life, for that matter.

Yeah, I love Shakey too. It's not only insightful about the music, but in a strange way, manages to capture the spirit of Neil Young better than his actual autobiography. At times Shakey reads like a great NY guitar solo: rangey, revelatory and yet surprisingly direct. He's particularly good at covering the "ditch years" in the mid-1970s. And this is despite the fact that Young effectively fired him (or at least had a falling out with him) with not much left to go with the book!

McDonaugh's a great writer and Al Green is one of my favourite artists so I reckon this book will be on my Xmas list for sure.
It's before my time but I've been told, he never came back from Karangahape Road.

There seems to be a parallel too. McDonough is drawn to enigmatic 70's characters that go against the traffic (which Green seemingly did with Belle)
